Need to buy harness (back carrier) for my infant - one that goes on my back, so I can take him hiking in the reservation, cross country skiing, etc. Front carriers are not an option.

Could any of you recommend a back carrying harness that you like, have had luck with, etc.? Also, ones to stay away from?

I'm short so don't want a harness that takes up my whole body as then it will just collect dust in the closet.

Thanks!

I don't think you will find it called a harness in the catalog listings.

We had a frame pack for our kids when they were babies that worked pretty well for walking, but I can't remember the brand. It was not huge and I was able to use it as well as my taller spouse, although I usually let him do it when we were all together. And, I've seen some pretty full-featured ones (with sunshades, gear stowing space, etc.) that have come out since then, but they do tend to be larger. We never tried skiing with ours, but did use it a lot for casual hiking on vacations, especially. All of the ones I've ever seen did have frames.

They tend to be sold along with regular backpacks. I know that CampMor has them and probably EMS, Bill's and most other sporting goods stores. I would also try baby supply places/catalogs, like Right Start, if it still exists (?)

I ordered a baby carrier for my niece from backcountryedge.com. She's out in Portland, Or & does a lot of hiking. They seem to have a large selection of carriers for people into outdoor activities.

We have a Kelty Town and Country backpack carrier which we no longer need if you are interested in buying a second hand one. It is in perfect condition and has the sun/rain hood. We took my older daughter all over the place with is - lots of hiking. My younger daughter did not like it so we did not use it with her.

if you want something with a little less, check out the ergo. i'm not at that point yet, but it is the route i plan to go when i need a more structured back carrier for hiking. but still don't want a huge backpack-like carrier that would overwhelm my frame.

good luck.
