Beginning tomorrow I have jury duty in the U.S. District Court in Newark. I'm just wondering how it might be different from regular (NJ courts) jury duty. What kinds of cases are heard in U.S. District Court vs. State courts? There is a 2 week "oncall" period. How does that work? Tonight I will call to see if I am to report tomorrow. Will I call in each night for the 2 weeks? How are the facilities? The Essex Vicinage court in Newark was renovated some years back and is actually a fairly comfortable place to hang out and read in while waiting now. How is the District Court space? Any insider tips I should know? Great, fast restaurants in the area? Thanks. |

The Newark District Court is fairly new and very nice. Fed court is more professional and generally handles more serious cases than state court. |

Cathy, I had it back in December. You call in every night and they tell you when you are to appear, usually two days after the night you call in. I never did have to go in, just had to make the phone calls every night until the service time was over. It is Federal Court and federal cases. Just be sure you call in every single night and punch in your number. |

Well, so far I'm on the calling in routine. Last night they said not to call again until Friday night. Now I get to go on my kid's field trip to the Paper Mill tomorrow. Yay! |

Cathy, Saw the Paper Mill production of Anne Frank and it was quite moving. The audience was filled with kids. Is this a special matinee for the schools? From what I read, most of the students were very respectful and more than a little effected by the performance. Don't miss the photo display on the second floor. It is not to be missed. |

Great! I've been reading good things about it. My guess is it might be a special matinee. Last night my kid was doing something for Black History and chose to write about Jesse Owens. (She thinks of herself as a serious sports fan.) So it was a great opportunity to learn about the 1936 Berlin Olympics and Hitler's ideas of racial superiority. Her response, after reading an article from espn.com, "Hitler was a really, really evil man!" I agreed. Next lesson: how easily people will follow an evil leader and the importance of standing up to tyranny and things that are simply wrong, even if your peers disagree. Like the poster in my office says: Stand up for what is right, even if you're standing alone. Her teacher has a very personal connection to the Holocaust and I think that has helped capture the kids' interest. |

There was an interesting article in the New Jersey section of the NYT this past weekend about the Anne Frank play at the Paper Mill and about the fact that there was such a high demand for student matinees that they added a bunch to the schedule. I think the article said that something like 9000 students were seeing the play. Oh, just pulled up the link in case you are interested: http://www.nytimes.com/2006/02/12/nyregion/nyregionspecial2/12njFRANK.html?_r=1& oref=slogin I wanted to say enjoy the play, but somehow that doesn't seem quite right... |

I did the federal jury a couple of years ago. I was on a panel, but then the case was settled or the defendant waived trial by jury or something like that, so we were dismissed. One difference I recall is that the jury pay is higher by quite a bit. I don't recall the amount, but I think the county jury pay is something like $5-10 per day and this might have been something like $40. (Numbers may be all wrong, but it was that sort of magnitude.) |
