Has anyone out there tried any of those "fat burning" supplements constantly advertized? Do any of them really work? Any dangers? I am looking to lose weight but without having to do substantial exercise, so I prefer the chemical alternative. Any other "women of substance" out there who've had success with these stuffs?

They all claim that they work with diet and exercise. Guess what? If you change your diet and increase your exercise you'll lose weight. If the amount of calories you take in is less than the amount of calories you burn each week, you will lose weight. You don't need pills, they don't work, and they'll make you jittery. |

Don't a lot of those fat-burner pills contain ephedra (though it may have been outlawed) or similar drugs that have potentially dangerous side effects? I will admit those commercials are very convincing. The one with the grandmother (who's in her late 40s/early 50s) coming out of the pool in a bikini is particularly effective. But I agree with Strings -- they all say that results occur with diet and exercise. If anyone diets and exercises, they're going to look better. |

Well, if they didn't work, people wouldn't be buying them, so some must do the trick. |

Lots of stuff that doesn't work is purchased anyway. Your logic is flawed. And the people who find they didn't work will admit that they didn't follow the prescribed program of changing diet and increasing exercise, so they can't make a claim. I believe these products say it will only work if you diet and exercise properly and that it's your responsibility if you don't, not theirs. You can't change the laws of physics. If you take in more than you put out, you accumulate a surplus. To get rid of a surplus, you must reverse the balance.

TR: Not necessarily true. You can change the rate at which that which is put in is taken out. |

I don't believe chemicals in pill quantity can change your metabolic rate. At least, not safely, and not in the long term. This is a snake oil story, centuries old. One common incarnation is in auto parts catalogs. They claim that if you add this expensive but tiny additive, you can improve your car's fuel efficiency. Ah, but if this science were proven, the car manufacturers would already have put it in your car. If this were medically proven, doctors would be recommending it widely. It's not, so they're not. Regular, strenuous exercise can increase your metabolic rate. But nothing worthwhile is cheap. In other words, the pills are a shortcut that are too good to be true.

Fight the Power Basically you will do what you want to do, and also believe what you want to believe. One word of caution, I have never used the chemicals, but have had patients who have. I work on a cardiac unit in a hospital, and we do get women who have tried, some only once , these fat burning suppements. Side effects can mimic a heart attack. Be careful, if you decide to use them. Also laying off caffiene while you are using them would be a good idea. A better idea would be lifestyle changes though, I will have to say. |

Fight the - desperate people have been buying miracle potions for hundreds of years, that doesn't mean they work. If the pills and drinks were effective it would be headline news in a society where half the people are on diets, and something like 1 out of 4 people are obese. Tom Reingold is right, the only way to lose weight is the old fashioned way - eat less, exercise more. I'll add - make peace with the fact that you will feel hungry some of the time. Good luck.

unless you are planning on taking diet pills to the rest of your life, even if they work and you loose some weight, you will gain it back as soon as you stop taking them, if you do not change your eating habits. i agree with tom and lydia and i will add to drink lots of water. before each meal, have 1 full glass of water - that will make you feel less hungry and you will have the tendency to eat less. if you don't like exercising, how about just going for a walk in the neighborhood? You'll get some nice fresh air and will allow your body to move a little. if you don't already have one, maybe you can get a dog - that will "force you" to go out several times a day. just an idea... |
