Sixtyish empty nester couple wish to become adoptive parents of a cat. Female preferred, short hair, youngish, but not a kitten. Good mouser essential. Would like a calico, mostly whitish, if possible. Can provide excellent loving home, place to play and roam, and mice. Anyone who works at JAC or vets' offices, or who has knowledge of such a deserving feline who needs a home, please respond on this thread. Situation becoming critical. Just saw mouse no. eight tonight. |

Go to the JAC and look at the cats - everytime I go there I'm tempted to bring a few home. I think tiger cats with thick fur are the best mousers. I figure they come from a long line of outdoor stray cats who had to adjust with camoflage and heavy (but not tangle-y) fur to survive. There are some really cool adult cats at the JAC who just own the place. These cats strut, that's gotta be a sign of a good mouser. JAC is open tomorrow around noon - check them out and tell us if you find a kitty. |

Lizzie, until your new calico finds you, my three shedding balls of love would like to donate the proceeds of their nightly brushings to your cause. Mice can't discern between live cats and fuzz balls. I'll store the brushings in a zip lock bag - yours for the asking. |

Las; Is that really true? If I put balls of cat hair around the mice will go away? I'll take it! Let me know when you have enough to give me, and we'll meet. I'll buy you lunch. If it works, I'll be forever in your debt. You'll know me becasue I'll be the slightly greying, large, freaked-out lady with a bag full of glue traps.

There are 2 cats in need of temporary housing while their owner undergoes cancer treatment. Perhaps that could fill the void until your next cat finds you? /discus/messages/3135/102330.html?1139614448 (I've thought about taking them in myself, but just don't feel ready yet.) |

Ooh, great idea Bets! Lizzie, you want to buy me lunch for giving you my cat fur? HA! It does work - I have an orange tabby who has kept a boss of mine mouse-free for years. Your profile won't accept a private line so why don't you try sending one to me so I know how to find the freaked out glue trap lady. - Lynn |

Lizzie, while you're waiting for feline success, you might try spring traps. They're really the kindest traps for the mice, leading to instant death. Cats can be rough on mice, at least if they're amateurs. (a good pro mouser is about as quick as a spring trap though - I've seen this in real-time ... ) But glue traps - shudder, no thanks. Use peanut butter bait - mice like this a lot. And I need to set a couple myself so you totally have my sympathy. Somebody's been leaving little tiny calling cards in one of my utensil drawers - yech. My current kitty is not a great mouser - lots of enthusiasm but little skill. |

I don't want to use spring traps, or poisons, because my grandchildren are around here a lot, and I don't want them hurt. Better the mice should suffer. So far we've caught and disposed of seven of them, with number eight still on the loose. We can't figure out how they're getting in, or if there's a whole colony of them. I am really disgusted. I can't take in two cats because I'm allergic to cats, and I'm going to have to start going to the allergist for shots again when I get a new cat of my own. He formulates the shots differently for each cat, so I think it's better if I wait. Las, I'm going to send you a PL with my phone number and a good e-mail address. I disabled the other one because the server was unreliable. Thanks, all.

We need to find a good home for my father's two cats. We'd be willing to split them up if we have to. My cousin tells us he will keep the cats and take care of them. But I do not believe him. One of my sisters and my brother in law have already gotten into a hugh argument with him for removing things from my father's apartment less then 24 hours after he died. He also wiped out his bank accounts. |

I had posted about a week ago about the person who is will be undergoing cancer treatments and needs a temporary home for her cats. Let me know if you would be interested in helping each other out. |

Lizziecat, I spoke to the owner of the 2 cats looking for a temporary home while she undergoes cancer treatment. She is willing to permenently give the cats up to the right home (yours perhaps?) They sound like wonderful cats - both are 7 years old, total loving lap cats - they're happy around dogs, kids and other cats and they love human companionship. The cats have had excellent care and were given a clean bill of health and all their shots 2 weeks ago.

Lydia; I really don't want to take in two cats. As I said, I have allerigies, and if I do get a cat, I shall have to go back to my allergist every other week for shots, and pop anti-histamines in the interim. I did this for years because I loved my cat, and I shall do it again if necessary, but physically I really feel better with out any cat in the house. If it becomes a choice between allergy shots and mice, I'll opt for the shots, but right now I'm going to see if Las' cat fur will keep the mice away. Today Las gave me a bag o her cats' fur, and I shall place it at strategic places around the outside of the house. Las is a terrific woman. Mouse number 8 was caught yesterday, in a trap baited with chicken. Hopefully there won't be any others. Hopefully. |

LAS/Lizziecat: Shouldn't the "cat fur" be placed inside the house since that seems to be where the mouse problem lies? If it is good enough to have the cat fur outside the house wouldn't getting a neighbor's cat to make itself at home in Lizziecat's yard on a regular basis be enough to keep the mice away? Lizziecat: If the "cat fur" needs to be placed inside the house, would you still need to get shots or are there some varieties of cat hair you can tolerate without shots? |

Joan; I'm going to go around the outside of my house and tuck the fur into any little space where it looks like something could get in. We have--we thought--sealed up all possible points of entry, but you never know. Cat hair is cat hair. If I have it in the house, whether on or off a cat, I'll have a reaction to it. None of my neighbors has a cat--at least not one that goes outside. Incidentally, we spoke to an exterminator, who told us that we're doing everything we should. He had no opinion on the cat hair, though. It's been two days without a mouse. Maybe we're done. I've been thinking about all those stupid Disney cartoons that make mice seem so cute. They aren't. They're disgusting and destructive and they spread disease.
