My barber in NYC has retired and I am looking for a new one closer to home in SO/Maplewood. Any recommendations? Would like to also bring my 2.5 year old son there. Also, it must be open on Saturday. Thanks! |

Larry's in Maplewood Village is open on Saturdays. Nice downhome atmosphere and decent haircuts.

Second vote for Larry's in Maplewood Village. My husband has been going there for years with my three boys (ages 2, 5, and 7). They have lots of experience with little kids. Larry and Karen are my kid's favorites. Bernie is good too. |

Thanks! How much is a cut for an adult or child? |

I'm pretty sure it's $12 for either. I know it is for the kids, because I just about fell over when I brought my little one recently. Seems like a lot for such a little head (but not much when I consider how much I pay to have my hair cut)! |

I just switched from Larry's to Leo's Barber Shop - Leo's is just down from Pathmark on Valley Street (on the S.O. side of Pathmark). If you blink you miss it. Leo just RAISED his prices to $10!! He's been there for forty years and is a one chair shop. |

Bernie at Larry's cuts my 2 year old son's hair and does a really nice job. My son has long hair and he always gives him a great cut without making it too short. |

You might also consider Luigi's, an old-fashioned barber shop at the corner of Vaux Hall and Burnett. Stepping into the shop is like stepping back in time. The barbers there were incredibly kind and patient when I took my 2.5 year old son for his first haircut. He was petrified and refused to sit still. They offered lollipops and changed the TV to a children's show in an effort to help. After 45 minutes of carrying on, he calmed down and they cut his hair while he sat in my lap. (They said they've seen worse, but I think they were just being nice.) They even collected a few locks of his hair in an envelope as a momento of the occasion. After all that, they said their policy is that a child's first haircut is free. Needless to say, I think they're great. |

Another vote for Luigi's. Old time barbershop. Also Michaels's in Millburn...my teenage son's favorite barber. |

Please provide more details on Leo's and Luigi's.... I haven't been happy with any of the barbers at Larry's, and have been looking for a good Haircut in NJ since leaving the UWS. I've driven past Luigis a bunch and have always wondered what it might be like....walk-ins allowed? How crowded? Anybody offer shaves or hot towels? |

I like Gerard's on Valley street in Maplewood. It's across from the shell station. I've been going there for years. It is a little expensive, but the guys there are very friendly and do a good job. Of course, anyone you ask will tell you that I do not go there enough. |

I've only been in Luigi's that one time, at the suggestion of friends. As I said, they could not have been nicer. They clearly do take walk-ins; I suspect more people walk in than make appts. There are three chairs manned by one older gentleman (Luigi, I'm guessing) and two guys who are probably in their early 30's. We were there on a Friday (late morning) and there was a steady flow of business, but there was little or no wait. Most people clearly were regulars, but everyone was warmly welcomed. From what they said, sounds like Saturday mornings are quite busy. Although no one got a shave while we were there, Luigi's is the kind of place I'd expect still offers them. |

RE: LEO'S - I get a buzz cut, therefore I am not very picky when it comes to haircuts (get it even and don't nick my ear, please). Leo's is all walk-ins I believe - one chair place, and Leo is quite the colorful character, nice guy. Place hasn't changed since 1967 by the looks of it. |

My boyfriend goes to Yeva, right on SO Ave. He never likes any of his hair cuts from anywhere, but I think that Yeva does a nice job, for whatever it's worth. |
