I'm driving my wife to JFK Airport on Saturday. Her flight leaves at 3:05pm. I've seen the "official directions" - any alternate directions? How much time should I allow for the trip? |

Not sure what directions you have, but I would take the Staten Island route. Avoids going in and out of Manhattan but tolls are expensive. |

Without traffic--and there shouldn't be too much that time of day--the trip via the 78/95/Staten Island/Belt Parkway route is about 1:15. If it were me, I'd leave for the airport at 12:30. But my wife would probably push for noon... |

COmposer, I recently took the JFK express train and it was really very easy, quick and cheap. NJTransit train to Penn, from Penn a LIRR Train to Jamaica where you pick up the express that brings you directly to the terminal. TOtal trip time is about 1 hour and 15 minutes to the terminal. |

CageyD - cool. How much did that cost? The directions I have: East on I-78 to NJ Turnpike south to Exit 13; cross Goethals Bridge to I-278-Staten Island Expressway to Verrazano Bridge; just past the bridge, exit to Ft. hamilton Parkway to Linden Boulevard (NY 27); take Linden Boulevard to Nassau Expressway directly to the airport. |

The last time I drove to JFK there was an accident on the Belt Parkway, a not uncommon occurrence, and it added almost an hour to my trip. |

On a Sat? Early in the day? On a holiday (for some) weekend? Aside from whether it is domestic or an international flight, I would give yourself 2 hours to get there, regardless of what direction you drive. The possibilities for traffic problems, and then the issues once you get to JFK can be quite aggravating.

If you schedule your flight early and are willing to leave the house and be on the road before 5 AM, the trip to JFK is incredibly easy. We drove to JFK from Maplewood via Goethals Bridge and Belt Parkway for an early morning flight about 3 weeks ago and the drive took under 50 minutes. We arrived back at JFK at 9:30 PM on a Sunday, and again, the drive home took under 50 minutes. We parked in the long term lot, and were pleasantly surprised by the train that stops there and then at each of the terminals. Coupled with the fact that we flew JetBlue, which I LOVE, (and before anyone points out that they fly from Newark, too - we needed to fly to Oakland, CA, and the direct flights leave only from JFK) the whole experience couldn't have gone more smoothly. |

Composer John, Here is the link to Air Train (I got the name wrong before). The cost is $12 from Penn to JFK. Really very quick and convenient with no concerns over accidents or badly timed construction to slow you down. GOod luck http://airtrainjfk.com/airtrain/

Thanks for the link. Jem - my wife is flying JetBlue to Rochester. It leaves only from JFK. It's a really cheap flight - $114! The train, which takes almost 8 hours, costs $88. Good deal. |

Definitely a good deal. Hope your wife's experience with the airline is as good as ours. There's something totally endearing about an airline that has TV screens on the back of each seat that say "If it weren't for you, we'd just be flying alot of TV's around." As for my driving-to-JFK-experience, I would caution that the easy drive is probably only possible very early or very late in the day, so you should give yourself plenty of time or do the train thing. |

I've done this trip tons of times picking my husband up from JFK at about 3:30 on a Saturday.(Jet Blue-we love it too!) I take 78 to the Bayonne Bridge (I think its exit 14?) to the Verazanno to Belt Parkway. Two weeks ago it took me 50 minutes. I've also done the Turnpike to GWB to TriBoro to GCP route and that takes about an hour as well but I've run into more traffic with this route. I hope that helps! |
