las's thread is closed now, but I found this interesting. Miss Manners puts her stamp of approval on flirtation. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/02/14/AR2006021401914. html

Some of Miss Manners' suggestions are as steamy as LilLB's. (I never got all hot and bothered reading the Washington Post before.) |

Yes.....agreed. But Miss Manners is the paragon of mannerliness, so, Las, if she says it's OK, it's OK. Capish? (That second letter to Miss Manners reminded me of "Mulva".) |

Ha ha "Dear Miss Manners: I have been dating my boyfriend for four months and it came up this week that he still does not know my name. I do not know what to do about this because he has heard my name so many times, both my English name and my Italian name. I also write it on everything I have given to him, yet he still calls me by the wrong name." |

Slight thread drift: Is there a discreet way to do the wedding band glance? |

Unless you're the kind of person who always looks someone straight in the eye, the guy probably won't notice the wedding band glance. Probably won't even realize you're looking. If you get caught looking - immediately ask him the time - he'll think you were trying to see the time on his watch (of course if you're wearing a watch, mention that your battery died) |

or if you get caught, just say "I was checking to see if you're wearing a wedding band." If he is, he'll be flattered. If he isn't, he'll be flattered

Lil, dear, you should be published. I don't wear a watch, so this will work perfectly, especially when walking down the aisle of the train I sometimes have to strain to find a man's left hand. They won't have to know I know the train is on time. May I keep you on retainer? Pippi - I'll try that one next week. Will you be my wing man? |

Sorry to burst the bubble, but just because there is or isn't a ring doesn't clue you into whether they are married or not. I know married men that do not wear rings, and I know some singles that do wear rings. Just knock them against the wall and ask them if they want you or not!!!! |

Mine too. I've been reading her for years. She has said some other interesting things about it. For instance, she points out that it is not merely acceptable, it's expected to dance with other partners when you go dancing. It's not stealing someone's girlfriend or whatever. This flirtation leads to fantasies that you don't act out, and these fantasies can make you even more appreciative of the relationship you have. Miss Manners' column comes out every week on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Bookmark it!
