Kings in Short Hills might be my new favorite. I'm a Whole Foods girl as well, but this place sells stuff WF doesn't (like fat free cool whip!) and lots of stuff that I thought I could only get at Whole Foods. And King's has the little discount card that all food stores except Whole Foods offer.

I enjoy the Shoprite in W. Orange at Essex Green. Bright, airy, great produce, killer deli section and bakery.

I'm one of the few that still buys my meat at WF. I think it really tastes better, especially the chicken. Raw meat is risky business anywhere. Plus, wasn't it decided that the renovation might have messed up the meats section at that Kings anyway?

Shoprite in Livingston.

Further away, but a great store, Stop & Shop on 22 in Watchung.

But I generally use Peapod!

Kings in Livingston, Chatham or Florham PArk, depending upon where I am. Trader Joes in Florham Park.

Can we talk about Peapod for a minute? How good is it? (I"m sure this has been discussed before so ignore me if I'm bringing up a tiresome old subject!)

This has been discussed before, but I have no problem saying again how much I love it. Of course it needs to be said that I pretty much loath grocery shopping, so having someone do it for me and bring it in to my kitchen is pretty close to heaven for me. I've never had any problems with them. The produce they bring is always fine. I've order fish and been happy with that. I don't eat meat so I have no experience ordering that. But if I did, I don't think I'd hesitate to order it from them. They always show up when they say they will. Twice out of the dozen times I've used them, they've been a few minutes late, but you always get a call telling you they're running late. I find the prices to be competetive with most of the other stores I've ever shopped at, and shopping the specials every week is really easy. All you need is a Stop & Shop card, and I'm pretty sure you can apply for one on the website, if you don't already have one. There's no impulse buying which has gotta save me a couple bucks every week. If I need particular items that I don't normally buy for a recipe I'm trying, I don't wander the store for hours trying to find it. The delivery fee (9.95 for any order over $100) is, IMO, quite a bargain considering the time and aggrevation it save me! I place a big order of all my basics with them every week. If they're out of stock on anything I ordered, or if I'm looking to pick out my own produce or ingredients for a particular meal, I make a quick trip to a local store--or Whole Foods or Kings--to fill in. But a half hour in and out for half a dozen things is so much more tolerable being there for an hour and a half or more, filling the cart, waiting on long lines, etc., etc.,

One tip for getting the delivery time you want: You can fill your cart way ahead of time with a minimum of $50, then Checkout and choose your delivery time. Then you have up until the day before your delivery (the timing depends on what time your delivery is scheduled to arrive) to finish shopping. And they don't bill you until after you recieve your order.

I like Peapod for the most part. They really ticked me off with my last order, though. I added a significant amount of items after I checked out and reserved my delivery time and none of the items I added registered with them. They are shown in my list on the Web site, but they didn't make it to the packing list. They never got back to me with an explanation. It's the first time it happened to me, though.

I have noticed that with the rise in popularity, the number of out-of-stock items has increased. With the last order I ordered two different types of whole wheat bread, to increase my chances of getting at least one of them. Both ended up out of stock. I had to go to the store, because I needed the bread for school lunches.

I use Peapod for the heavy things I don't want to lug. If I absolutely need an item, I go to the store.

FYI, my Peapod delivery fee is less. Last time I checked, I pay $6 and change for every order over $100. I live in Livingston. Perhaps it's less for certain areas?

Actually, to be exact, it's $6.95 for me (I just checked) for orders over $100. So obviously Peapod charges different delivery fees for different areas. Just FYI.....

PS I love the service for the most part, but I agree that I have had issues lately with basic items like milk being out of stock.

Trader Joes in Florham Park, Wegmans (any Wegmans), whole Foods, Pathmark on 22 and Stop & Shop in Watchung (also Rt. 22).

You guys are tempting me to try Peapod, especially for heavy and/or bulky things. Sounds almost too good to be true!
