How long do you think it will take to walk from Broad Steet station to the Newark Museum? Would you guess this is a half mile walk? |

Five minutes if you are by yourself. 10-15 minutes if you have kids with you, depending on their ages. 1/2 mile is about right. |

Probably 5-10 minutes at most. I haven't done that walk since 1971 when I commuted to Rutgers. From the station to the campus at New Street was only 15 minutes at a normal pace. |

If you want to cut out the walk in Newark, try taking the 70 bus (they will accept a monthly NJT rail pass from Maplewood/South Orange in lieu of cash fare since the bus trip covers only two zones. In Maplewood, you can catch that bus at just about any street corner on Springfield Avenue. You can also try driving. We have never had a problem finding parking at the museum. |

I am a scared driver -- yes lame I know. I don't do highway driving ... that is, until yesterday when in an effort to find Funtime Junction I ended up on Route 46. My six year talked me down. I am tempted to try driving but most likely will take the train. Anyone interested in joining me? I am thinking of taking the 11:52. Our goal is to see the 1:00 planetarium show. http://www.newarkmuseum.org/presidentsday/ |

I know it is too late for today but either Springfield Avenue or South Orange Avenue will get you to Newark. No highway driving is required. |

What Joan said. I'm a pretty scared driver, too, but I routinely drive to Newark Penn station. There's some good but pricey parking in a garage right across the street from it. You can literally get on Springfield or SO Ave and take it right down town. Well marked street signage. Check out Mapquest, Avoid Highway option. |

Which is better to get to Maplewood from Newark during Rush Hour? Springfield or SO Ave? Which is better coming home late at night? I have cabbies ask me which I prefer coming back from Penn Station late at night, and I just tell them whatever. |

Both are heavily trafficked during morning and afternoon rush hours. Late at night they both seem about the same to me as well in terms of safety issues, etc. I'm usually driving myself if it's late at night rather than taking a cab. I'm pretty sure I'd feel safer in a cab just because the cabbies do the drive all the time and probably have a better developed sixth sense about trouble and how to avoid it. So I guess it comes down to what is the better route for you to enter M-SO. Are you closer to one than the other? |

Springfield Ave is much better, although I've not given much thought to Safety issues...is there problems along that route? I knew there were some run-down areas, but didn't think it that bad? Which intercections concern you the most? |

I took the train. Thanks all. We had a good time at the museum. We are now members since I anticipate a few hot summer mornings with nothing to do (and no central air) in our future. Depending whether I can find cheap parking (cheaper than the $3.50 I spent on a train ticket) I may try driving next time. Today's adventure .... Florham Park Roller Rink at 1:00. |

Don't forget, trains for kids are part of the fun. Also, while Newark doesn't require highway driving, the "no turn" and "One Way" traffic controls can be distracting for out of town drivers. |
