So in an effort to curb my chocolate intake, I started eating a variety of nuts, and trail mix containing nuts. I go through phases, I might not eat it every single day, but might eat it every day for a few days (until we run out). I only eat trail mix from Trader Joe's...I had tried one from Costco but remember not feeling well after eating so I thought perhaps it was preservatives I was sensitive to. A few days ago, I realized I have been suffering from more frequent (mild) headaches. I have no experience with nut allergies or sensitivities. I did a little research online and I know the symptoms I'm feeling can be caused by food sensitivities, but does it make sense that it would happen when it's never bothered me in the past? If so I need to find a new snack! |

Have you checked the ingredients on the trail mix? Sulfites are used in many dried fruits (and thus may be part of your trail mix). Sulfites can cause a mild headache, such as you describe. By the way, before you substitute trail mix for your chocolate, check the fat content, too. |

(nuts are very good for you but are very high in calories - don't over do it) maybe you can try to have particular types of nuts at a time - you might be ok eating pistachios or almonds and have a problem with peanuts, for example. |

I wasn't thinking calories or fat, more protein fiber, but considering I put on a few pounds AND I have headaches, it seems kind of ridiculous. I guess I will avoid the nuts/trail mix and see if that helps. If not, the next to go is —gasp— red wine! (OH HORRORS!) I wasn't even eating good chocolate though, SOL, just the remains of my kids' Halloween candy! |

Nohero, Nosulfites, but 10g of fat at 190 calories in one salty/sweet nut mix and slightly less in the rainbow trail mix. YIKES! (And that's only for 1/4 cup, I probably ate 1/2 cup). See what happens when I think too much! I'm going back to my Kit Kats & Twix!

Allergies can come and go suddenly. My younger daughter has one of those life-threatening allergies to nuts. I hope it goes away one day. It does happen to some people, often in their 20's. Some people who think they are allergic to nuts or seeds are actually allergic to the mold that tends to form on nuts and seeds. But there's no safe way to test, so you may not ever know.

Tom, when I was pregnant with my second kid I suddenly became lactose intolerant. Problem was I had been eating too much dairy (mainly ice cream & frozen yogurt) and I developed a sensitivity to it. I was ok if I ate certain types of dairy in moderation. (Not junky ice cream, only stonyfield frozen yogurt, etc.) I think the nut thing is like that (for me, not your daughter, two totally different ballgames). I have been overdoing it and now I'll stop it for awhile and try it in moderation in the future. |

VIG--About 4 years ago I became allergic to wheat. While not the same situation as you, it appeared suddenly but was probably the source of past symptoms that I didn't associate with consuming wheat. I had headaches, stuffiness, wheezing, etc for quite some time, years. Only after I eliminated wheat (no easy trick) did these symptoms disappear.

I have a sensitivity to nuts, but my reaction isn't headaches - it's severe abdominal/gastrointestinal pain. It can be really debilitating. It's really strange; It started happening about 10 years ago, but believe it or not, I really didn't make the connection with nuts until the past few years. It's awful because I love peanut butter, but I know I'll be suffering for it. I'm not even sure that it's all nuts, but I'm not willing to experiment - I just avoid them all if I can. |

If you really are allergic to nuts, an hour spent on MOL would put you in the hospital. |

VIG: Is the trail mix the only thing you have changed in your routine lately? Have you been feeling these symptoms at times not linked to trail mix ingestion? Just make sure it is the trail mix causing the headaches. Try going without the trail mix (and its ingredients) for a few days and see if you feel any better. If no, you might want to check you eyeglass perscription (assuming you wear eyeglasses and/or contacts) or check with your doctor for some other cause.

VIG: My mother suffers from Migraines, and Nuts are one of the top triggers (one of the theories behind Migraine suffering is that they are triggered by food...she swears by this theory, since changing her diet changed her frequency of migraines). LilB, last night in particular after eating the trail mix my stomach blew out like one of those Gas X commercials. I wasn't in pain, but felt really full. That's when I put that and the headache thing together and realized I just ate nuts. Joan, I also stopped taking a certain medication recently that I thought might be contributing to my headaches and weight gain. (Don't wear glasses.) Looking back and the past few months, I do think it's a combo of the medication and the nuts! I started a food journal so I can keep track of everything. My sister told me she has been doing the same thing and it's helped her realize what triggers certain reactions. We'll see.

VIG: Hope you are feeling better and I hope you didn't discontinue taking that medication without checking with your doctor first. (I'm assuming the medication was either perscription or recommended by your physician.) If you tell your doctor's office that you need the appointment because you are suffering from serious side effects to the medication you are taking, they may see you sooner or at least schedule diagnostic lab tests. Anyway, calling and trying to get an earlier appointment couldn't hurt. You say you don't wear glasses. Are you sure you don't need them? Mild headaches are often the first sign most of us get at about the time we really start to need reading glasses. Please keep us posted on how you are feeling. |

Joan, I will definitely look into the glasses. It's true I might be getting to the point where I might need them... The medication was not for anything serious or life threatening. Thanks for your concern. |

Smarty, she was about four when we knew some sort of food gave a problem but we didn't know what it was. When I gave her a nut all by itself when she was five and she said it made her throat feel awful, we knew it was nuts. Her reactions grew in strength after that, and we built habits which avoid nuts. Interestingly, peanuts are not nuts. Biologically, they are very different. However, molecularly, they are similar. Some people are allergic to peanuts and not nuts. Some, such as my daughter, are allergic to nuts and not peanuts. Some are allergic to both.

VIG, almonds give me headaches. I can't even eat mixed nuts with the almonds picked out, or food cooked with almonds with the almonds scraped off, without getting a headache, sometimes of migraine severity. However, I can eat any other nut in the world just fine. Someone once told me that almonds contain trace amounts of arsenic, although I don't know if that's the cause. So I suggest you try avoiding almonds alogether - even other nuts that have touched almonds (may mean switching to another brand of trail mix) - and see what happens. |

VIG - Yeah - the awful "full" feeling is what I get along with it too. I'd be very curious to hear what your doc thinks is causing this - if it's an allergy or what. I've mentioned it to my doctors, but they just kind of shrug and say "huh." ... |

LilB, my experience with most drs. is they have no clue about nutrition. I am sure if I went to a dr. and said I was having headaches and could it be food related I would be prescribed a headache med. or told to take Advil or Tylenol. No nuts yesterday, though I had a big salad for dinner and really wanted to put my candied pecans in it...it was tough to not! but I felt better and definitely less overstuffed! |

Last night I did have a minor headache, but drank lots of water and decaf green tea with lemon. I do think it's too soon to be sure, but I'm going to eat really well today and drink lots of water/tea and hope it helps. Physically, I do feel much better. It's very possible the minor headache is eye strain and or sinus related too. |

Friday after posting I had major headaches all day. I ate well (healthy well, lots of fruit and salad) so I was disappointed. Today I did the same thing and felt great. Either my body was just detoxing (the whole idea behind eating only fruit and salad until dinner)or I was staring at the computer too long. Since I don't have headaches today I certainly will pursue the eyeglass scenario. My mom says I squint ALL the time! |

VIG, Friday was a headache day - a cold front had come in overnight. Maybe you're now getting barometric headaches? Changes in air presure can wreak havoc on your body. Yesterday there were no changes and you didn't have a headache. Don't know what today will bring weather-wise, but if you do have pain, look outside and post about it. Having cut out the chocolates and detoxed a bit you might now be more sensitive and experiencing things the caffeinne and sugar previously masqued. Regardless, ice packs can do wonders for head pain. Break out the frozen peas and rest - you can have relief in minutes. |
