Mayor,
Here's a reason to quit: I did, and so we'll both be non smokers together if we ever get married.

Buzz, I think that I feel less like a person wearing a pretty pink dress, and more like the picture of that girl slamming her head against the diving platform.

Being awake is really the only bad time. Everything seems to be OK when I am asleep.

mem, I never thought about it that way. Not only non smokers, but ex - smokers.

I think I might even smoke a Newport right now. And I hate Newports.

A couple of days ago I would have agreed with you. But right now, I just don't know anymore....

You know what sounds good right now... a nice cup of coffee and a smoke.... MMM...MMM...good...

You need to focus on something else. Howzabout trying the "get laid now" feature on Craig's List?

Oh, never mind. Post-coital problems.....

Hang in there Mayor! I quit my 1 1/2 - 2 pack/day habit in October of 1990. It was very difficult, but MAN was it worth it.

I had dreams for years that I smoked and "blew it" - I wanted cigarettes so badly I thought I would just die without one. But I didn't, and hopefully, I'm farther from dying because of it.

Everyone finds their own groove on the right way to quit - I hope you've found yours. It really is truly worth it.

LilLB - No groove yet, I just haven't smoked. I actually don't feel too bad. I just kind of feel slightly annoyed all day long.

I was smoking somewhere between 3/4 a pack and 2 packs a day. The average was proably about 21 or 22 smokes a day. Actually, I should say "delicious smokes."

Buzz, The only reason I wouldn't put a cigarette in a smowman would be because I didn't want to waste it. Actually, it would be pretty funny. So, if I had a full pack I might have to do it. (Hopefully I won't have a pack to be able to do it)

Many, many years ago when I first tried to stop smoking, I had a sailboat that I kept on the Shrewsbury. I went sailing one day with my wife and purposely didn't take any cigarettes on the boat.

I got the craving, spotted someone on the dock smoking, tacked into the dock, bummed a cigarette, and was on my way.

It really is a monkey on your back. Stick with it cheese.

Actually - I don't remember any of it feeling like I was in any kind of groove come to think of it. It just felt pretty awful for a while, but I think you'll find that those other activities that you associate with a cigarette - like having a drink or drinking a nice cup of coffee - you'll enjoy just as much if not more all by themselves...

Lucy, I would not have enough time in the day to write a post every time I wanted a cigarette.

Still smokfree!

I think my new slogan will be "Smoke free till 83." I figure that if I make it to 83 I can start again. If it takes 20 years or so for any problems to happen that would make me 103 by the time it really caught up to me and I should be about ready to kick the bucket by then. (And when I die I will smell like a dead body, or a fart, or another person who I can't say his/her name or I might get banned for it.)

Besides, I'm sure it would give some people a good laugh to learn that an 83 year old man was trying to pick up smoking.

when you are 80, I should be somewhere about 183. So it would also be a good time for me to start hitting tequila again.

mayor, keep on keeping on

Hey Buzz, I had a smoke tonight. I slipped. But, on the good side, I didn't really like it. It really made me light headed and didn't make me feel so good. I had a few drinks and slipped, but ended up putting out my cigarette a few puffs early.

Mr. Mayor
This is a minor setback. You will be smoking in your dreams for years to come. Just don't do it again or your brain might fall out of your ears. It's true. Read the label.

I suspect that it was because I had a few drinks in me last night. I don't think it will happen again.

Mayor:

You have made trendous progress. You had a smoke and you didn't like it.

Now: just focus on the "didn't like it" part rather than the "had a smoke" part and you will do fine.

You can do this. Just think of all the people who have already shown they can quit smoking and stay smoke-free. You are every bit as good as they are.

Honest, the above message was made with good intent, in no way do I condone Mayor smoking, I support him all the way from the cigarette vending machine to the bar, where I will buy him a beer, the next time I see him that is.
Less tobacco
