Hi all: We're moving to SO in June, and I'm looking for a good summer camp for my 6yr old daugther. It can be full-time or part-time. I'd like to find something that's either in SO or Maplewood, or not too far a drive away. My daughter loves to swim, play sports, music... she's basically up for anything. She'll be in 1st grade at the Marshall School in September, so it might be great for her to be in a program where she'll meet other kids from her school. I'm sad she's going to be leaving her buddies when we move, so I'm hoping to find something really fun for her to do this summer on the days I'm working. Hoping it'll help her transition to her new neighborhood. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated! |

We really like the camps at the Summit YMCA (about 20 minutes away). I know a lot of Maplewood kids go there. They may be full at this point. http://www.summitymcacamps.org/ Welcome to the neighborhood. |

Welcome! there's a thread in Arts & Entertainment about camps right now. I have sent my kids to the South Mountain Y camps in the past - I believe they are having a camp openhouse soon (see MOL calendar). I know the Baird Center (SO community center) has a camp that people love...I think the JCC has a well respected program & possibly some of the temples. There is a free magazine (Parent Paper?) that usually lists camp info - I know you can pick one up right inside the South Mountain Y childcare facility on West Parker accross from Gleason Cleaners - maybe in Bagel Chateau in Maplewood too. Good luck! |

There definitely is room at Harbor Hills Day Camp, where my daughter (she'll be in 2nd grade next year) and my son (who'll be in K next year) had a blast last summer. It is near Randolph NJ, but they provide door-to-door a/c bus service AND hot lunch buffet daily! It runs from 8-4. We did all 8 weeks last year and are doing 4 with the possiblity of "adding on" additional weeks, depending on our family vacation plans. Check it out at www.hhdc.com. |

The Summer Playground Program through the Baird Center in South Orange is good, and a good way to meet fellow South Orange kids since it's almost entirely local kids. The application are available on-line. I don't have the link, but you can goggle The Baird Center, South Orange and I'm pretty sure it comes up. The applications are being accepted March 1st through the 15th, so you're in time. It runs from 9 - 1p 5 days a week, but I will say it's not highly structured. They go to the pool 2 days a week, play games, have a talent show, a few field trips, stuff like that. It's also an excellent value. My son is six and he'll be going, as well as my four yr. old daughter. Feel free to private line me for any more info. vmlorino@verizon.net. welcome! |
