I have been going there for a long time, and while I like the people who do my single-process and cut, the overall attitude drives me crazy. Everyone is snippy as hell (and not in a good, hair-cutty way). I don't mind paying $$, but I want a relaxing and pleasant experience as well as a good color and cut. Can anyone suggest a place in either NY or our area that I can switch to? Not anthony garubo?

I've been to Alma and she gave me a nice cut once, but the color was very opaque -- really all one color. She was a lovely person but it looked a little weird so I never went back. My hair is probably strange that way --

If you don't mind the price, Magnolia's in Millburn was great while I was going there. I always had a very pleasant experience and my hair cut, color, and highlights always looked great, it just got too expensive for me to keep up with. (I now buy L'oreal couleur experte for $18 at Harmon's and have a friend do it for me every 2 months....).

Amateur - there are several other colorists at Chelsea Set.
Lots of people like Kevin, although he's pricier than Alma

I don't think Kevin's there anymore... I went to him once and was just okay with the cut and color. He recently left a message on my machine saying he's someplace else now, but I don't remember where.

She & I discussed his departure. Pippi's hair is not at all flat, it's radiant! Deb, maybe it was too dark? I'm surprised.

I won't go to Anthony Garubo anymore for a personal reason, but I miss Ampy a LOT!

She does a great cut and has a real eye for color. I've sat amazed as she has finished other people while I get my highlights. She knows what she thinks looks good, but will do what the customer wants - her goal is to make you happy with the results.

(I'm actually almost ready to suck up my pride and go back to her - maybe under an assumed name...)

I have to say, I started going to Adrienne from Garubo after so many recommended her - I think she's wonderful, and has a great ear for what her clients want (I didn't feel that way about Kevin - sorry - but where did he go?)

I've also found them to be practically falling all over themselves with service... am I the only one? I've heard comments to the contrary, but I'm telling you, it's a pleasure going there for me!!

I agree about Kevin. I got an email from him saying he was going to some place in -- Madison, maybe? I felt that he did not listen to me, so I went to Antonio's in Livingston before I found out he left.

I got a great cut at Antonio's and had a very nice experience. I would recommend heartily.

I'm probably biased ... however I would recommend giving Alma a second chance.

Speaking as someone who has had his hair cut by her ever since I was just a kid (I'm 23 now), she was nothing short of great. She really was one of the friendliest people at the Chelsea's Set, and she would know how to cut hair even with the minimal amount of detail or description given to her.

I'm sure if you specified the qualm about the previous results she would be more than ready to correct and oblige the next time around. After all, one haircut a haircutter does not make, right? It takes time for someone to understand their client's hair, regardless of how good they may be.

Eire, I agree with you, and I'm one of the people who recommended Adrienne.

When I first moved here almost 8 years ago, I tried Garubo. I went a total of 3 times, and each time something happened that just pissed me off. One time I called and scheduled a cut and color. Somewhere along the line someone "F'd" up, and the color was never scheduled. I didn't find this out until I had been sitting unattended in a chair with wet hair for about a half hour. When they finally realized the mistake they basically told me I'd have to wait another half hour before they could fit me in for color. Tough luck for me. No apology, no offer to make it up to me in any way. Don't remember the specifics of the other incidents. Suffice it to say I really didn't need the snotty attitude, just wanted a good cut and color. Vowed never to go back.

Then, a couple of years ago, I admired a friends hair and she recommended Adrienne. I was so desperate for somebody good (had tried Chelsea Set and Images in Millburn) that I decided to give it another try. It has been my experience that they seem to have gotten over themselves at Garubo and really are focused on customer service. Have had no issues with them whatsoever since I've gone back. And I do love Adrienne.

I would say that the Garubo experience is very dependent upon the stylist. I have had positive experiences there, but the last time I went, I left with a hatchet job on my newly bright orange hair. (Yes, I should have said something on the spot.)

Preferably, I stay with a salon/stylist for as long as possible, but I will switch when I feel that the styling has gone stale. Nowhere around here has been as negative as the results at Garubo.

Magnolia's is no more. They declared bankruptcy last Fall right after my husband had purchased me a gift certificate to go there. Sigh.
