Hi, My entire family lives south of here, but we have people coming from MA this weekend. I have no good directions to tell someone coming south on the parkway how to get to this area - I'm near Columbia HS... thanks!! |

Exit 143B (the sign says "Maplewood/Hillside"). At the end of the ramp, turn left (there is actually a sign). Here is where it gets tricky: There will be no further signs and the neighborhood may be rather scary. They will go about 3 lights -cross Lyons, some other street, maybe one more and hit Chancellor. The key is that they get to Chancellor - Irvington General will be across the street on the right & there is a light at that corner. Take a right onto Chancellor & go all the way until it ends (not far - maybe half mile?). That will be Springfield and they will be across from the bus depot. Turn left & give your favorite directions to your house. If you are near CHS, they can turn right onto Boyden & take it to Parker & turn left onto Parker. |

Why are they coming on the Parkway from MA? Get them on the Turnpike to 78 and get off on Vauxhall. Then they can avoid the "scary" neighborhood. What does mapquest suggest anyway?

they're going this crazy route via Albany... don't ask - so the only lead I have is parkway south... I think they'll probably come over the Tappan Zee... Can't they take the Vaux Hall exit off the parkway then take Vaux Hall to valley?? I'm just guessing... thanks greene and carla - I appreciate the quick response |

Parkway south to exit 142 to 78 west. Go one exit to 50B. Right at the exit onto Vauxhall. Go 4 lights - make right at 4th onto Valley. |

What Joy said - easiest for out-of-towners. |

I agree if your guests are coming from the Tappan Zee and then the GS Parkway, probably the simplest is to get on 78/24. But, if they're coming from Western Mass, and using the NY thruway, then have them get on 287 south (not sure, but I think exit 15 or 16), and just continue on to 24 to the Maplewood exit. |

Definitely 142 to 50B. If you don't know where you are going it can be a bit scary through Irvington |

It's definitely 142, but they are heading EAST before they go west. 78 only goes that way from the south on the Garden State. When they come out of the toll, they get off IMMEDIATELY to the right where it says 78. It doesn't say east or west, but it's east. Once on 78E, they will have to immediately exit, there is a sign that says 79 WEST. It's sort of like a jug handle on the highway. Then it's 50B like usual, off of 78W. Trust me, I've gotten myself and other people lost in Irvington, and it's not a very fun ride. |

Jay, they are heading south from MA - I think Eire was incorrect that her family lived south of here - she probably meant to say north and they were heading south. In that case, straight shot down GSP to 142/78 West then next exit which is 50B. If they can handle the 287 from Suffern to 24, that's a way to go as well but since Eire said that they're coming over the TZ, then TZ to Thruway north to GSP south is the way to go. |

287 to 24 to 124 east (aka Springfield Avenue) then a left on Valley at Millburn Collision would be the fastest way if they are coming south on the Thruway from Albany. We have relatives in Worcester, Mass. and that is the root they take. If by chance they aren't crossing the Hudson at Albany and coming down the east side of the river the Parkway to 78 route works well for people not familar with the area. |

Thanks, all, for the directions - the silly folks ended up getting onto 280 for some reason -- a whole 'nother story... Wendy, I'm PRETTY sure I'm positive that all my family is south of here(lol). I grew up at the shore, and I know how to do good directions coming north from south. I just wanted to be clear that this was parkway south coming from north. Sorry for any confusion!! |

Probably not so silly. I've found, after much experimenting, that 280 is the quickest way home for me from the southbound GSP! |

That's true for many SO and NW Maplewood folks, but definitely not the case for those of us on the other side of the towns from 280. In fact, I rarely go on 280 to or from anywhere. I use the same exit from the GSP southbound as Greenetree, although I usually take Lyons Avenue up to Sprinfield Avenue rather than going over to Chancellor Ave (although I guess I'll have to try that now to see if it works better.) I don't usually send out of towners that way, though, as it is harder to describe (and more problematic for them if they get lost) than the I-78 to exit 50B route. |

Sorry Eire; I just merged your two thoughts: family coming from MA and family from the South. No problem. If they're really coming via Albany, they definitely should do the 287 to 24 route. I can talk you through it if you want for you to convey to them. I have an excellent sense of direction and know how to give good directions. LOL, give good directions. That's a joke in the making. |
