Back in December I fell. As a result I needed five stitches in my left leg. My right leg just had a few scratches. Here we are a little more then two months late. The scratches on my right leg somehow didn't heal. My doctor has tried treating my leg with antibiotic cream as well as orally. It doesn't seem to be working. My leg is infected to the point it's swollen and red along with just looking icky. When I last saw my doctor Thursday he wanted me to go directly to the emergency room for IV antibiotics. I have no desire to spend who knows how many hours sitting in an emergency room. The last time my sister went she sat there 13 hours before she got frustrated and just walked out. I know this can be done at home, or in an infectious disease doctor's office. Does anyone know of an infectious ideas doctor that does this? Can I go to one of those mini medical places? I really do not want to sit in the ER. Thanks! |

Why doesn't your doctor admit you directly into the hospital? Bypass the E.R. (you don't need to be evaluated.) Sit in a comfy hospital bed, get your I.V. antibiotics and watch T.V. "Nurse! I have an itch. No, higher... yeah, right there. Oh and can I have a glass of water?" J.B. |

Did you ask your doctor about alternatives to the ER? |

JTA, If your doctor is sending you to the ER for a specific treatment, IV antibiotics, than I doubt you will have to wait, you are not just a "walk-in." Call your doc and ask if that is the case and does the ER already have the "doctors orders" for your infusion. This could be a very serious infection since it requires IV antibiotics and you should not put it off. Without proper treatment it could become systemic. Sounds like it could be cellulitis. |

Emmie's right... A few years back, I developed an infection/cellulitis in my lower leg, went to doc's office with a fever and he took one look at it and said, you are to go straight to the ER.. I wanted to stop at home first, but he said NO. I went to ST B ER, and was in a room within 15 mins of arriving. (in fact, I had signed in and was calling home to inform spouse of my whereabouts, when my name was called). The doctor must have called ahead with the orders. Ended up spending 8 days in the hospital getting IV antibiotics. GO! |

JTA: Like everyone else has been saying, this is not an option. Go NOW! Call your doctor. If they're sending you you'll be taken right in. As you need to be!!! |

Agreed. This could be very serious. No doubt the doctor thinks you may end up needing emergency care as well as the IV medication. The emergency room is the best place to be at a time like this because their staff is trained to handle any further complications which may arise. If you haven't gone yet, GO NOW! |

Hey hey hey, everybody stop ordering JTA around. Just because a medical "doctor" instructed his/her patient to go "directly to the 'emergency' room", and past experience with said patient's sister and ERs is spotty at best, is no reason to shout medical advice to JTA. Sure, JTA's sister (Just the Mom?) has the patience of Job - who among us would sit in an ER for 13 straight hours before finally becoming frustrated and leaving?? 13 hours of walk-in (gurney-in?) emergencies way more "critical" or "important" than JTM's. (yeah, right) That experience must have left JTA scarred. Not unlike the pustulating infection on her leg. I find it perfectly reasonable for one to mistrust one's own doctor and seek anonymous suggestions/sympathy from the internet. Some of us are doctors, after all. Dr. Arthur Curry |
