Does anyone have any experience with either of these facilities? I have a puppy that I need to have neutered, but I want to be sure I take him to a reliable & reputable place.

No need to go so far afield for a simple neutering. There are quite a few great vets within 5 minutes. I use Dr. Levine as South Orange Animal Hospital and like him very much. In the last few years he's helped me through the loss of several of my kitties, and he's been great every time. To me that's the true test of a vets "bedside manner." His prices are reasonable as well, and probably slightly lower than some others in the area.

This past summer we had an "emergency" with my dog, and Dr. Levine spoke to me from home on several ocassions, just days after he himself had hernia surgery!

I like Dr. Perez at West Orange Animal Hospital. Congrats on the puppy!

Gotta agree with MeAnd.. Dr. Levine is the best. He really cares about "his" animals and gives the best treatment. Call him at 973-763-2600.

I take my dog to Livingston Animal Hospital and have been very pleased with it. It's a large, clean, new-looking facility. The vet was knowledgeable and charming, and spent a relatively long time with us considering we just had a minor problem (swollen, bitten tail, which turned out to be an infected gland).

I took my new kitty to Livingston Animal Hospital to be neutered, since S.O. does not participate in whatever program it is that does neutering on animals adopted at shelters. I think I'm going to switch to them permanently. Levine's SO office can be a real pain for both parking and waiting in that cramped waiting area. I also didn't care for Levine's attitude about my kitten's physical state, which was poor when I adopted her (underweight and lethargic, but I fell in love with her). He couldn't believe I'd adopt her given the way she looked, and said "Do you want a cat, or do you want THIS cat?" I don't know, I just found that to be a rather callous statement.

And as it turns out, she's thriving - just needed a lot of love, which she returns tenfold.

Thank you ALL so much for your feedback. I was specifically asking about these two hospitals because they do participate in the "neutering program" sponsored by JAC. The cost is nominal compared to those vets that do not participate (i.e. Levine & Stack). That being said, my new "little man" is worth the money & I would have paid more if I had not heard such good responses about Livingston.

Thank you again.

Mooewe-- where did you adopt your kitten?

Kim-- JAC does not sponsor the program, The State of NJ does through its "Animal Friendly" license plate program, the most successful special interest license plate program in the state. JAC, as well as other licensed, reputable shelter/rescue groups can offer you the opportunity to use a low-cost facility through the program because you have adopted an orphan.

Cat - I got my kitten from JAC. We also got a young dog from them around the same time. This dog had, at the time we adopted him, some food aggression issues. When my husband mentioned it to Levine, he again was a bit incredulous that we would even consider adopting him. He gives us the impression that he likes to see the "perfect" pets, but not the ones that have problems. That's probably not fair, but with both pets we walked out of his office feeling defensive and ticked off by his attitude.

And again....we adore this dog, who has added much joy to our house.

And how is the food aggression? That's something that should be dealt with and rectified as soon as possible, or it could potentially escalate. You need to establish that you are boss over everything, including the food. I dealt with this with my dog when he was a pup. If you need some pointers I'd be happy to share.

Moeewe-- I'm glad you adopted from JAC. My username is the catman of JAC. Though I have been absent the past few months, I had been very active for eight years.

I'm surprised to hear of Dr. Levine's attitude. Though I've used Dr. Stack most of the time, I once had to make an emergency visit on the Saturday of Labor Day weekend with Dr. Levine, and he was very kind, thorough, and helpful. I also spoke to him on a Sunday about a potential urgent situation, and he put my mind at ease. Additionally, I was buying medicine from him for one of my cat's being treated by Dr. Stack because Dr. Stack was having difficulty getting it. Maybe he treats referrals from Dr. Stack and JAC people well, as I know of others who think highly of him.
