I write a column for the News-Record called GRAIN OF SALT, and am considering writing about the Academy Awards, being I attended it twice. I'd like to have a local angle and interview folks who have run Oscar viewing parties or plan to do so this year.

Please send me a private note and/or reply here if you fit that description and live in Maplewood or S.O. Thanks!!

Joel

Joel, The South Orange Library is holding it's 11th annual Pre-Oscar Discussion with Allen Barra. Participants get to hear Allen's picks, fill out a ballot on their own and then wait to compare their guesses with the results. Everyone is welcome to join us on Thursday, March 2nd from 7:30 - 9:00 p.m. in the Library meeting room at 65 Scotland Road in South Orange.

Jeol, come by if you can!

Thanks, this is Allen Barra, the WSJ Columnist and writer? I'll definitely include a reference. Do you think it's safe to say that many families in Maplewood and S.O. will be hosting Oscar parties?

Allen lives in South Orange and has always been generous with his time and expertice in speaking to audiences at the Library. Don't know of any OScar parties locally, but then, I don't know EVERYONE in South Orange

If someone can get me his contact information quickly, I may be able to squeeze him into the column.

I host an oscar party/gathering almnost every year and my good friend and I usually do a race to the oscars to try to see as many nominated movies as possible. Sometimes we see 4 movies in a row. It's one of my favorite days of the year!

Hi Joel,
Other Maplewood/SO residents (or at least one, but more, I think) will be at the Oscars for the Enron film, which is the favorite to win best documentary...I'll be going to a party to celebrate at the home of someone else who worked on the film & will be one of the only folks there not in the film business...
I'd be happy to put you in touch with the hostess!
I'm at doulamomma1@hotmail.com

The deadline has passed, but I appreciate all the help! The column comes out tomorrow, and I hope everyone enjoys it. I liked the ENRON film very much (frightening stuff!), but I have a soft spot for those penguins... :-)

The following links courtesy of SOMA's own Larry Seltzer, Contributing Editor to PC Magazine and Security Center Editor of Eweek.com...

For the purposes of those of you who are at all competitive about guessing Oscar winners, here is TV Guide Online's complete ballot for this year's Oscars: http://online.tvguide.com/special/oscars/2006/Oscars2006Ballot.pdf

And for those history buffs intersted in cinema arcana, here is the Academy's database of past winners: http://www.oscars.org/awardsdatabase/index.html

Thanks, Larry! I, myself, personally no longer get excited about the Oscars; they lost all significance to me when the Academy arbitrarily chose to move the date of the ceremonies from the night when The Little Woman & I would traditionally celebrate our anniversary with an early dinner at one of the better local restaurants, followed by a dash to the family room couch to view the telecast in all its tedious glory...

-s.

BTW: For those of you in a gambling mood on Oscar Day, please note that I, the one&only Soda, will be in attendance at SOMEF's annual QuizBowl, to be held this year at Maplewood Middle School, starting at 1PM.

I plan to replace some of the income I've recently been deprived of (as a result of having been stripped of my annual R&R week in Boca by my ex-boss, the cosmically cheap Oracle of MOL) by inaugurating the First Unofficial SOMEF BrainSports Book, accepting side-wagers only on Adult Division Final Results.

And now, a bit of inside info from a seasoned tout: Rumor has it that the aforementioned --the lovely and semi-omnissient Mr. Seltzer -- will be gracing last year's Adult Division Champs (the mighty Hoopleheds) with his vaunted quick recall skills. Anybody wanna lay odds on another Hooplehead triumph???
