my mother-in-law brought us some left-over roast beef - I've just heated it - it has shiny pink patches - a bit like eye shaddow...is this normal? Is she trying to poison us? Eww |

I don't know, but I have never been able to eat left over beef. For me, it has a taste of what death smells like. I've tried to use leftover beef in all kinds of disguising recipes like chile, etc. to no avail. Try it on the cat or dog first!! |

OK - I called a friend who went to chef school - apparently the "rainbow" issue with the beef is completely normal & is oil & water not mixing (like sometimes when there is a little oil standing on a lake)...still sort of gave me the creeps & I didn't eat much of it...at least I wasn't thinking of "the smell of death" at the time! My dog thinks he hit the jackpot - I guess that remains to be seen. |

The very best thing to do with leftover roast beef is to make shepherd's pie. Here's how. Chop the beef into little cubes. Now cook some carrots and peas together (or if you have leftovers from dinner just heat them up), add the meat to this, and add any leftover gravy on top. (or just take some beef stock and thicken with flour and mix in). You should have about equal parts of vegetables and meat, and only enough sauce to hold everything together. Put in a casserole dish and cover the whole top with a healthy layer of mashed potatoes. Add a sprinkiling of sharp cheddar to the top if you like. Bake at, oh, maybe 350 or 375 for 25-30 minutes or until everything is heated through and bubbly. Yummy yummy yummy - and you don't get that "leftover roast beef" taste that upondaroof mentions (never heard it described that way, but I know what you mean - you can't reheat roast beef on its own - the only thing it's good for is cold sandwiches & Shepherd's Pie!) |

sure sounds better than what we did with it...will try it next time - thanks CLK! I recently used roast beef leftovers to make a stroganoff (thickened juice a bit, added paprika & sour cream & some mushrooms etc.) & served with egg noodles & a salad...it was very yummy. |

"you can't reheat roast beef on its own - the only thing it's good for is cold sandwiches & Shepherd's Pie!)" That may be as far as a cold sandwich, since I can eat a roast beef sub, but Shepherd's Pie? Wel that's just not right!! |
