My Dad passed in July after 52 years with my Mom. She is in NJ and I'm in northern New England about 330 miles or 6+/- hours away. I wish I lived closer to her. She seems really lonely lately. We talk several times a day with her - my wife and the kids. I'm planning on heading to Mplwd. this weekend or next because I feel she really needs us. She spends the summers here in No. New England like her and Dad used to, but between now and then she seems "lost" and very alone. I know when we visit soon her spirits will soar. I feel for her so much, but I'm very far away distance wise. She has really showed some interested in the computer lately and I suggested she contact Maplwd library about beginner PC courses. Any suggestions for her to meet with people and stay active?

Well, I'll volunteer to help out on the computer front, just let me know what I can do.
I don't know much about what is going on for seniors in the area, but it sounds like the library is a good place to start.

where in NJ is she? If in Maplewood/South Orange, check with the rec departments for their seniors programming...or any other town for that matter if she lives elsewhere.

Does your mom knit (or do other needlework)? There is a lovely knitting circle at Pen & Jens Tea Bar on Saturday mornings. All skill levels, all ages. She'd be welcomed like an old friend.

I go, as do a few other posters.

What kind of activities does your mother enjoy? Is she involved with her place of Worship? There are some Senior Groups in the area. I'll try to dig up the info for them for you. If your mom likes to do jigsaw puzzles or play board games, I'd be happy to spend a couple hours a week with her. I'm guess your mom is in her 70's?

Monster- Much Obliged. I'll run it past her. It's difficult to provide tech support to her over the phone and being there in person – hands on would really help her. I may PL you if she’s receptive. She’s in Springfield now after 20 + years in Mplwd. She stays active with the church, but that’s downtown Newark and a bit of a trip for her as she is in her late 70s.
Everyone else - thank you for your very kind offers and suggestions.

crossroads have you mom checkout the Springfield YMCA, it has a very high senior population. Great place for her to make friends and get in shape!
