This is a stupid question; but I thought they usually expire at the same time. I bought my car last May (2005). I had my plates transfered from my old car. The inspection sticker on my car is valid until May 2009. Well I discovered my registration expired this past November. Is this normal? My old car was bought in November. Maybe there isa mix up because I transfered the plates? The dealer charged me to register the car for a year. |

I'm pretty sure registration has to be renewed each year; the length of time for the inspection differs--it's longer for a new car; I think it's every 2 years for an older one. You should have received a registation renewal form in the mail, with a PIN to use for online renewal. A couple of years ago, I didn't get the form and had to go to the MV office to renew. I went to the one in Springfield, and it was pretty quick. |

First off, inspection is every 2 years and registration is annual, so right there that ought to tell you something. http://www.state.nj.us/mvc/ is probably a better source of information than http://www.maplewoodonline.com/forum.

Registration has to be renewed every year. New cars get inspected after 4 years. The State will send you a sticker that extends the original sticker's 2 year expiration date, an additional 2 years. After that, inspection is every two years. |

Thanks all. I think when we got the new form it went in the shredder because we just didn't think. I figured since I only had the car six months there was some kind of mistake. Looks like I'll be going to Springfield one day next week. Have to renew my license too. |

Renewing an expired registration costs TWICE the fee. Just had to do it, since we must have missed the registration letter. Blood suckers. |

was in the same boat recently (registration and inspection dates different) so I didn't realize the registration had expired went online to renew the registration -- got a print out to prove it was renewed, got the hard copy a few days later. and NO added (double) fees! (JTA -- how are you feeling?) /p |

A double fee still beats impoundment. Happened to me once, and it was humiliating, as well as expensive and irritating.
