My 8 year old son is scheduled to have a tonsilectomy with Dr. Fieldman this week. Can anyone who has been through this with a child give me any advice, or tell me what to expect?

My son had his tonsils out years ago, but the thing that I remember most is that when he was recovering, he didn't want ice cream. What he wanted--and what his grandmother knew he would want--was soft bread. That was the only thing that he would eat for a couple of days until the worst of the soreness eased.

My lady friend had this done a few months ago. That was a bad time for me... I mean for her. She couldn't eat solid food for almost 2 weeks. She was forcing down ensure to get some vitamins, but her diet basically consisted of flavor ice. She didn't want ice cream at all, which I thought was wierd because people always want ice cream on TV after stuff like that.

I don't have any advice about children's experiences, but as someone who had them out (along with my adenoids) as an adult, I say you're making the right decision getting them removed while he's young - you're saving him A LOT of pain later... (I've had other women tell me the pain of getting them removed as an adult is worse than childbirth...)

Pear Nectar! This was the only thing I could drink for a week after my tonsillectomy as an adult. As the nurse was wheeling me to my car, she told me to drink a lot of pear nectar. It really was the only drink that didn't cause excruciating pain. Dr. Feldman removed my son's tonsils (he was 3) many years ago. It wasn't painless - he didn't want ice cream - but again pear nectar worked.
