A friend is bringing her daughter from England next week for her 16th birthday and while they're here they want to shop for a prom dress for the daughter. Any suggestions where they might go, in NYC, or better, NOT in NYC?

If she not against consignment she can try Double Take in Short Hills, the new Goodwill on Rt 22,
Willing Hearts in Caldwell, Marlenes in West Orange,
etc etc.

The Bloomingdales at Bridgewater Commons has a fantastic dress department with a very wide range price points and very prom-appropriate.

Second for Short Hills mall. Lots of dresses in a wide price range, and a lovely shopping experience (have lunch at Bloomingdales!). Don't forget a Macy's coupon!

I've only met Mr. T once, but I am certain he would look stunning in a prom dress.

You might consider Neiman Marcus' "Last Call" at Jersey Gardens Mega Mall. It will have excellent prices on very high quality gowns.

It does seem that 'proms' are now catching on in England, even in the public schools....when I was at (public) school we just had a leavers disco and only the exclusive private schools would have a formal ball; my daughter went to a boarding school for girls in Oxford from the age of 16 -18 and every Summer as the academic year is ending they have a Ball. In the school grounds they erect a marquee, hire a band, have caterers in to provide a formal dinner and champagne and have fairground rides installed at the school playing fields....boys would come along from the nearby Oratory school to be 'dates' for the girls. My daughter wore an Indian sari although we're caucasians!

When I was home last Summer I did notice in the local area newspaper some photos of school leavers from public schools at their 'proms' and there were even some stretch limos which had been imported from the States.

Here is some advice if the mum is going to the Short Hills Mall and/or Jersey Gardens: tell her to take her passport or UK driving licence to the concierge desks. Anyone with an address of more than 50 miles from the malls will be given discount coupon booklets for 10% to 20% off the retail price in most of the stores in each mall.

There is another place for Prom dresses at JG mall...it's on the level beneath the food court in a corner position...can't remember the name of the store but it will be obvious if you're outside it....prom dresses are towards the back of the store.

I would try Short Hills definitely. THere are many choices, different styles. My GF that just came over from Englad to do some shopping was shocked by the styles. She said the fashion here was VERY different from England, and ended up not buying a lot.
