I'm wondering if there are any used book stores in the area that accept books and/or magazines, CDs, DVDS, etc. as trade ins for new. A place like Milk Money in maplewood or Other Mothers in S.O, but for adult books and music. There was a GREAT chain of large retail used bookstores out in the southwest where I recently moved from and I miss it so much. I loathe spending the outrageous prices Borders, B and N, and the like charge for books. And, of course, I already use the library, but I have a handful of books I'm ready and willing to trade for some new ones. Any suggestions? |

Morristown, John Street. They have to be in good shape and of attrection to his customers. I believe Montclair has one also.

Thanks! Do you know if he sells/accepts new trade hardcovers and/or paperbacks? I'm looking to buy the fairly new stuff for used prices. |

The Montclair Book Center (off Bloomfield Avenue) in Montclair sells both new and used books, and they buy used books. I haven't been there in a while, but I assume they're still there (it's so hard for independent bookstores to stay open, with high rents and competition from the "big box" retailers and the Internet). |

The Montclair Book Center is an excellent used book store. They will buy some of your books, maybe a few CDs but probably none of the magazines. Don't count on them taking everything you have, and you should call ahead to make sure they are "buying today." They are located at 221 Glenridge Ave., just off Bloomfield Ave. 973-783-3630. |

Ligeti is absolutely right about Montclair. If you have a lot of books you need to make an appointment--if only a few, they often will price them right there (if you ask nicely and browse a while so they have time to do it). They prefer to give in-store trades rather than hand out cash. They have an amazing selection of both new and used books, but the new books are not usually separated (except for right up front) so you may need to browse the stacks a bit to find new. But what a selection! I never leave there without at least 5 books more than I expected to buy. |

Ligeti, thanks for filling in the details about the Montclair Book Center (which I'm guessing you retrieved from a paper-based source ). And Eats Shoots & Leaves, I've been on a strict budget lately so I guess that's why I haven't been there in a while--it's impossible for me to walk out of a book store without having spent more money than I intended to going in to the place!

Former Cowgirl, I know the Old Book Shop in Morristown sells old magazines, but I think they are pretty selective about what they purchase. There's another used book shop, in Madison, on Green Village Road, called the Chatham Bookseller. It's a fairly small space, and I believe they are also pretty selective about what they will buy. But if you like browsing in used book stores, it might be worth a trip--Madison has a nice shopping district with some good restaurants.

Former Cowgirl, I bought most of my Christmas gifts at Half Price books in Dallas. Everyone that received them loved them and I also wondered why the chain hasn't moved north. It's a no-brainer in these well read communities. |

I have a small ringed binder, which I bought at Drugfair. And I can retrieve numbers and addresses far more quickly and efficiently than individuals who use computerized address gadgets.

I knew you wouldn't disappoint, Ligeti . I, too, have a small paper book for my appointments, important phone numbers, etc. And I agree with you that I can access the information in there faster than having to deal with "gadgets" that run on power sources that can fail. |

Thanks, all. The place I frequented in Arizona was called Bookman's and it was amazing and it would do SO well here. It was basically the Barnes and Noble of used books. They also carried CDs, videos, magazines, DVDs. All used. There are about 6 throughout Phoenix and Tucson. www.bookmans.com |
