Does anyone know when and where to have a child car seat installed? I've tried calling the Livingston Police dept. and left 2 messages but no one has returned my calls. I had a car seat installed there before but I think they have certain days that they do it. Any ideas??? |

I don't know about Livingston but I know Westfield police station does it every Wed & Thurs mornings from, I want to say, 7-11? I'd give them a call. It is a great system, we've gone several times. |

Didn't the seat come with an instruction book? They all our supposed to and if it didn't you should contact the manufacturer immediately. I can see having somebody teach you how to put in and remove a baby seat, but I personally would not want anybody else to hook up my kids' car seats. Plus you absolutely need to be able to understand how to transfer these seats from car to car.

wnb, Yes the seat came with instructions. I took the seat to be installed at the station previously and they do a great job (they are there specifically to do that). They secured it much better than I could have and that's what's most important. I will need to transfer the seat to an airplane and another car so I want to ask them a few questions and watch how they install it. |

ditto--these places do a great job. You may think you have your seat installed correctly according to the directions, but surpringly a very high percentage of child car seats are not installed properly. |

On Wednesdays you can have it professionally installed for free. It's on Corso Avenue in Livingston. I went there last week and they did a really nice job. |

Thanks Zach, do you know between what times? I think it's just for a few hours, right? |

rosie - i have most of the details written up at home, but i did a quick search, and this is what i found. The Essex County Child Car Seat Fitting Station, run by the Essex County Child Passenger Safety Coalition, provides inspections and fittings of child car seats in automobiles for free. This service is conducted by Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians, and is available at 120 Dorsa Avenue in Livingston (where the Volunteer Ambulance Corp is located). The Center is open every Wednesday and Thursday from 9 am to 4 pm (except major holidays), and no appointment is necessary. For more information, please call: 973-429-6896. The other place is the Union County Police Department in Westfield. It's about the same distance as the place in Livingston, and i've been to both, but I liked Westfield a bit better. I just got the impression they do more inspections than the place in Livingston - although i'm sure either place is fine. WEDNESDAYS & THURSDAYS 7:00 A.M. - 11:00 A.M. NO APPOINTMENT NECESSARY (908) 654-9830 I recommend you call either place first, just in case the info i found online has changed. Although just a disclaimer, i drove all the way out to the facility in Livingston once, and found out they'd closed early for the day. Even the recorded message on the phone had failed to mention that. Oh, and i believe even the volkswagen dealer on Millburn Ave also does inspections as a service to the community. You can call to make an appt, if you choose that route. |

I HIGHLY recommend a little gadget, called "Mighty Tite", if you're concerned about getting a tight fit! It's so easy to use and makes moving the seat from car to car a breeze. No more getting in the car and trying to push the seat down, etc. It uses a rachet-type system to take all the slack out of the seat belt and then some. You can get it so your car seat absolutely does not move at all! I loved it while my kids were still in 5 pt harnesses!! http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000056JHP/102-8630127-5541741?v=g lance |
