So far they have taken EVERYTHING that we have put out with the exception of paint cans (even if they have no paint).

From Spring 2004:

Rules

This program is intended for the disposal of household bulk refuse items that are not allowed to be put out with the regular garbage collection and includes items such as refrigerators, washing machines, dryers and furniture.

Restricted Materials:
1. No building material of any type will be picked up. Building material is defined as concrete, sheetrock, plaster, dirt, wood, shingles, roofing material, siding, kitchen cabinets, decking, windows, or any related material due to the remodeling or alteration process. The homeowner or contractor must remove this as part of the alteration process.

2. There will be no removal at any time of car parts, pipes over four feet in length, tires, heavy metal, paint or paint cans, trees, branches, tree stumps or firewood.

3. Do not include regular garbage in with the bulk refuse items. Regular pickup for ordinary garbage will continue to be made from the rear of your home as before. Do not place these garbage containers at the curb.

How to Package and Where to Place the Items for Collection:

1. Household bulk refuse is to be placed at the curb only on the dates indicated for your area according to the map. The items must be placed at the curb no later than 6 a.m. on the scheduled date and not earlier than 5:00 p.m. on the day before.

2. Small materials must be tied or placed in disposable containers, such as bags or boxes, that can be handled by one person.

3. Loose materials must be placed in a strong disposable container not exceeding 40 pounds.

4. If material is a mess, ripped open or loosely thrown on the ground, it will not be picked up.

Collection Methods:

Contractor may make multiple pick-ups of different categories of bulk refuse on the assigned day of collection. Please allow a full day for all items deposited at curbside to be collected. However, once the collector has fully
completed an area, they will not return. Failure to follow any of these instructions could jeopardize pickup of all your items. Do you have any questions about the household bulk refuse program?

Please call the Department of Public Works Monday through Friday between the hours of 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at 973-762-1175.

I have found that the DPW takes pretty much everything. We have had out carpet remnants, shingles, a toilet etc. We have also had people who are scavengers get into our "neatly tied piles" and everything is thrown all over the place by the next morning. It is still picked up.

And on the day before bulk pickup, empty your car out (or better yet, borrow a pickup truck) and cruise the neighborhood, because there will be some good pickings from the stuff people leave out. Bring a flashlight.

And look up when the various scheduled pickup days are, because there are several.

I'm only half joking. I haven't done this, though enough people do this that there was a NY Times article about Maplewood's bulk pickup. Lots of folks from other towns will be driving pickups on your street.

We have acquired the following in good to excellent condition on past bulk pickup days:

17" HP computer monitor (lasted two years after we picked it up from the curb)

4 patio chairs with cushions

2 "flip beds" (great for sleepovers)

And probably a number of other things that I'm forgetting.

That was back when I had a van...

Just please let them take my old rusted garbage cans. I don't want them, and I'm sure nobody else wants them.

Purplebug- we have tried and tried to get the trash persons to pick up our old garbage cans and finally had to put a big note on them asking them to take them...no matter what we did before that note worked!! So make sure you mark them if you are putting them out for bulk pickup.

We put our stuff out, it gets picked through and sometimes stuff shows up that we didn't put out, like a pile of Polish language magazines. So far the guys have picked up everything, so I am not complaining. I just wonder if people from other areas cruise around and dump their stuff or if scavengers unload something if they find something they want more.

bobk, probably both.

The lamp on my desk right next to me is from bulk pickup. It was my neighbor's. We also got some nice picnic benches from up the street.

My son loved scavenger night (as bulk pick up night is called around here) when he was younger. Among other things, he found and brought home the following:

ham radio
guitar
key board (musical kind)
carton of age-appropriate books

The only rule we had was that if he brought something home that night, he had to put something else out of equal volume. Otherwise he would never have fit in his room.

I love when I see people take our stuff when we put it out! I feel like it's getting used, even if we can't use it.

taam - put EVERYTHING out on the curb - chances are it will be mostly gone even before Waste Management comes by...

And when it's nowhere near pickup day, and you want to give something away, so as not to burden the landfills, give it away on Freecycle! You can also request things. I've given away and received lots of things there.

Another reason I wish I had a Maplewood address - South Orange stopped bulk pick up years ago. {{{{sigh}}}}

Our previous town also did bulk pick up. Oh the junk, er...treasure, the kids would drag home from the neighbors! We tried for a few years to throw out a rusty garbage can. My husband finally got the bright idea to put it in another garbage can. That did the trick!
