Hello, I'm a graduate student at Montclair State University and I'm working on a project that entails locating local resources for preschoolers and their parents. The information will be used to help build a resource file so families and schools can be referred to the appropriate resources.

Does anyone know of any organizations or agencies that provide any of the following:

-services to identify children with developmental delays
-staff training for teachers and aids on improving their skills in general
-social services
-grants for schools
-financial aid for preschool
-childcare for children under two years of age based on a sliding scale

If you know of any places, please contact me at n.svetvilas@att.net. Thank you in advance for any ideas you may have!

Eln - I work at the Therapeutic School in Belleville, which also has a preschool geared towards children with developmental disorders. It is a "state approved" school for children 3-14 who cannot be mainstreamed - I don't know if three years old is too old for what you're looking for or not. I myself am not a specialist (just the music teacher) but let me know if you'd like any information or contacts.

Call Essex County Department of Public Health. The identification of children is called "CHILD FIND" in NJ, and they advertize in newspapers, community bulletin boards and schools. They are able to evaluate children at all ages to five. You contact public health nursing for your county, they contact child study teams who can perform educational, psychological and social evaluations. At age three, any child previously identified or potentially eligible for classification for a disability will be referred to the district child study team for evaluation. They will be placed in facilities serving their needs, as necessary, and will have an "IFSP" which is pre-school's form of an IEP.
I know, as I have performed ed. evals for children in this age group.
Also, Trenton's Department of Education can give you the whole story on this regulated process.
If you want to go through private evals, you have to do your own research to find evaluators.
Children's Specialized Hospital in Mountainside should be able to help you.
