My parents are ready to sell their home and move into a retirement community, my Mom to assisted living and my Dad to a nursing home. Has anyone had experience with Green Hill on Pleasant Valley Way in West Orange? |

Ask Tony Soprano. That's where his mother stayed. But seriously, no, I don't know anything. |

John, it seems to be VERY expensive. You can always tour these assisted living places.. West Orange seems to be full of them! |

I'm working on this for my parents in another part of the country. I spoke to someone at Winchester Gardens who referred me to a senior living referral service called "A Place for Mom". (see http://www.aplaceformom.com) Let me know if you'd like me to email the name and phone number for the New Jersey contact. So far, they seem to be pretty helpful. |

Thanks Suzanne and sac. It does not seem to be as expensive as Care One in Livingston or Winchester Gardens (sac did you find out anything about their prices when you talked with them?) I have it narrowed down to Heath Village which is a good deal but so far away in Hackettstown, Green Hill, and the other alternative is mom keeps the house in Madison for a while with some part time help and dad goes to White House nursing home in Orange which is expensive but close by. |

I should mention that my parents are very different than their children. They both grew up in Greenwich, Connecticut and we belonged to two country clubs as kids. They are much fussier that their children with living standards. My sister and I are happy in Orange and my brother in a similar area of Fort Lauderdale. Taking Mom on a tour of Green Hill today. She is the fussiest. |

Thanks, Suzanne. I will look them up. We basically picked facilities that have both assisted living and nursing home care. One in West Orange that is near the center of town is Canterbury Village, a small facility that has both (probably run by the Catholic church) but we could not find a report card for it so, without ratings, we didn't investigate further. |

I have done some work for Green Hill over the years and have been in the facility quite a few times (although not in the last 5 years). I was always impressed. The place was beautiful, clean and very well run. I cannot say the same for Care One where my father spent a couple of miserable months in step-down-not as a resident. That place was clean and new and attractive but my impression was that the staff didn't give a damn. Very short on compassion. At Green Hill, if Marie Powell is still director, she was great. |

John, if your mom decides to stay in Madison there is a very decent nursing home nearby in Chatham Twp. called King James (doesn't seem to have any overt religious connection.) My mom stayed there for 5 months some years ago and was well cared for. So, are you an MHS grad? I'm class of '73. |

Yes, C. Bataille, I am. Class of 69. Were you at the last big reunion? I had a lot of fun last year seeing old friends. Dad was at King James just a week ago! It is very nice for a nursing home but Green Hill has both assisted living and nursing home so mom and dad can live together. I was very impressed with Green Hill when I went today. Luxurious, spacious, with lots of activities and a varied menu. I am sure they will like it now that I've had the tour and asked questions. Thank you everyone for your responses. |

Whoops! Just took four years off my life. '69 was college and '65 was MHS. That means that you were probably too young to get an invite to the ten class reunion. I think it went from '60 to '70. |

Erickson (one of the big sr developers) has a community in Tinton Falls, Seabrook (my parents are there), and closer in Pompton Plains. They have their own unit there, and should they need more assisted living (Renaissance Gardens), that's on site, too. They dreaded leaving their home of 30+ years -- but truly love their new home. Perhaps not as close as you like, but http://www.ericksoncommunities.com/ I'm really pretty amazed every time I'm there -- the place is truly set up for older adults -- regardless of level of health or mobility. All the best -- Pete |
