I'm wondering where to go to get a decent pair of ice skates. I don't need top-of-the-line, but I'd like some that aren't complete garbage, either. Looking for skates for an adult occasional, recreational skater. Thanks in advance for any suggestions. . . . |

I suggest Skate-Buys in Rockaway. http://skate-buys.com/figureskates.html The address is at the bottom of the page. You'll pay less than the sporting goods chain-stores, you'll have a much better selection and the staff will be MUCH more knowledgeable. |

What size do you need? I see them all the time at garage sales. You can put in your order and I will scout them out. Sherri |

What about the ice skating rink at Turtleback? Or sports Authority, or Dicks? |

Sherri - my wife LOVES garage sales - she normally compiles a very long list every weekend during the spring... PM me and I'll get you copies! |

Thanks, all. And thanks, Sherri. Mine (and my son's) are actually from yard sales, and my daughter's are hand-me-downs, but I was contemplating getting some for my brother-in-law for his birthday. Went to Sports Authority (after calling ahead to confirm they had stock) only to find about eleven pairs total in the whole store. I'd still like to get myself a better-fitting pair, as the ones I nabbed at a yard sale are too big. Maybe I'll check out Skate-Buys next time I'm in those parts. |

I'm currently enrolled in adult beginner skating lessons at Floyd Hall Arena and found out that my skates are too big. One of the instructors recommended a place called "Sports Section" in Cedar Grove, located on Pompton Ave (aka Rte 23), as they are very knowledgeable. Apparently, choosing a pair of new skates is not exactly like choosing a new pair of sneakers. Generally, your skate size is approximately a size smaller than your sneaker size, and once fitted, your skates then need to be baked. I'm talking about hockey skates here...don't know about figure skates. |

I used to be in the ice skating scene with my girls and we were constantly upgrading our skates as they got bigger and better. To avoid it from becoming a cost-prohibitive activity I bought all the skates used at the pro-shop at the (now called) Cody arena - the one near the Turtleback Zoo. At that time, they always had a decent selection and the quality was better than the new ones you'd find in target or Modells. (I was hanging around there so much I also bought myself a pair.) They also posted "skates for sale" signs in their office. I never had to call one of these but I remember seeing them often. Well - now my 11 year old has just started - rollerskating. (There's a GREAT program at the Florham Park Roller Rink!) We're on our second upgrade in six months!! does anyone know about a used outlet for - rollerskates??!! Thanks & good luck! |

The pro shop at Cody/South Mountain is closed. It may reopen when the renovation is done, but for now, the best option is the pro shop at Mennen Arena in Morristown. They have an especially wide array of high-quality used skates, and will also replace the blade but leave the boot if needed. My daughter is a skater and we make the trek there every year. |

If its hockey skates you're after, the place referred to above at the corner of bloomfield ave & pleasant valley way is Verona Sporting Goods (or something like that) and had by far the best selection of hockey skates and equipment I've seen around here; plus the place is owned and operated by the former coach of the Seton Hall Prep hockey team (a great HS squad) so he knows the right way to outfit you with skates.
