This is very embarrassing but, can anyone recommend a shampoo to fight off dandruff? I've tried Head and Shoulders, T something and Selson Blue with no luck. tried washing my hair with cold water, not blowing it dry (then my hair not only has dandruff, but it looks like a rat's nest); even putting a glass of water near the radiator so the air isn't dry. I have strange hair! My hair is somewhat oily at the roots, yet I have dandruff in the front of my scalp; the rest of my hair is somewhat dry. To make matters worse, if I don't blow it dry it get s real kinky. Any suggestions would be appreciated. |

Nizoral is the best and you only need to use it once a week. It used to be by prescription only. Funny thing, when I googled it I got this site: http://www.embarrassingproblems.co.uk/dandruff.htm Here is the US website http://www.nizoral.com/products/ Happy shampooing

Interesting! I took an anti-fungal medicine for something else years ago, and my eczema and dandruff went away at the same time. So now Nizoral, and anti-fungal, has a dandruff shampoo! Now that I'm off the anti-fungal oral medicine, my dandruff is back. I've been living with it and dealing with it since I was eight years old. It's not because the skin is dry, as you note. It's because some bodies have a tendency to get fungus. So now I will try Nizoral dandruff shampoo!

JTA - I have the same problem and it is very controllable. First off, the dandruff is likely caused by the oily hair, not dry hair. Most people aren't aware of that. I used the prescription Nizoral many times, but the over the counter isn't quite the same. I recommend seeing a dermatologist who can prescribe something for you to use two or three days a week, in between OTC shampoo another recommendation - use conditioner only on the dry ends, not on your scalp |

JTA another suggestion - since the dandruff is caused by the oil on your scalp, try to wash your hair every day so the oil doesn't build up. |

Tom and Justtheaunt, I wonder how many fellow MOLers have fungus and mistakenly self-diagnose the embarrassing flakes and annoying itching as "just dry skin." Would you be so kind as to post pictures for us? |

File this under (Boy, Am I Going To Regret This). I actually won a contest at one of those horrid Bridal Shower Parties when the topic was "What is the most embarrassing thing you have in your purse/bag?" The amount of meds/ointments I had that are prescribed for one (embarrasing) thing that can be used for other ailments was beyond belief. I won a very disgusting assortment on recipe cards. Boy, was I glad that I humiliated myself for those. jml |

Just the Aunt, it is possible that with dry hair you are washing it too often. I can only wash mine every two weeks in the winter and once a week in the summer. I have to use shampoo that has oil and placenta as ingredients. The shampoo bottles say "for extra dry hair". I have used more than one brand but I haven't had dandruff in many years since I stopped washing so often and looked for those ingredients in my shampoo. Even if the surface of your scalp has oil, it is obviously not reaching the hair folicles so less washing is better. |

As someone who has been treated by a dermatologist for 15 years, I respectfully beg to differ with John James re: less washing. JTA can always add heavy duty conditioners to the ends of her hair to moisturize and treat them, but the excess oil caused by washing infrequently will cause the fungus (possibly seborrheic dermatitis) to flare up. Frequent washing with the appropriate shampoos is a good treatment. |

Tom, "Sure, aquaman. Show me your embarrassing thing, and I'll show you mine!" I was going to say "you first" but it's a little late for that. I am blessed with a fungus (fungi?) free lifestyle, but I feel your pain - we must always strive to feel the pain of the fungi-afflicted. |

I have the same proble. My dermatologist recommended Loprox shampoo. It is a prescription shampoo. I have very curly, dry hair and have to shampoo everyday. I use the medicated shampoo every 4th day. When I use it regularly, the flakes go away. I would suggest you see a dermatologist for your problem |
