I am sorry for yet another repeat thread, but I am not finding what I want in the archives.

My current Gyn is in NYC and it's time to switch. I may as well think ahead and choose one who is an Ob...

I remember a male Dr highly recommended here, last name either begins with an S or an M (I'll recognize it when I see it).
If anyone goes to this unknown Dr., his name and number would be greatly appreciated.

Other searches have consistently brought up Dr Doreen DeGraff, but that was at least 2 years ago. Any recent thoughts about her?

thanks

Hi Pip,
My gyny, Dr Corwin, just retired, so I am referred to Dr. Abu Alam in Summit at 908-273-5907 - I haven't gone yet but he's very highly recommended, however I am not sure I want to go to Summit myself. Good luck.

I use Dr. Joanne Sommer on Old Short Hills Rd. Although there is usually a very long wait to get a check up apointment with her she is extreamly accomodating for emergencies. She once reopened her office for me at 7:00 pm because of a scare. Granted, she had bumped me earlier in the day to go deliver babies, but I was really impressed and grateful that she accomodated my need to see her immediately.

Sorry. I don't recommend Abu. I had two kids with him. I'm not sure why I stuck with him so long. He's more interested in who you know and if he sees them on the cocktail circuit. He also did some things during labor I was PO'd about. I won't go into details here.

I like Mary Alice (mentioned on the other thread) at Summit Medical Group. Don't know if she's just gyn or ob too.

Mary Alice is ob too. I wasn't thrilled with her.

I do love Dr. Maureen Whalen of Summit Medical Group in Short Hills. She delivered my 2nd and was great and I use her for routine physicals.

2 caveats with SMG.
1. You are not guaranteed to get your doc when you deliver because there are so many they rotate on call. So my 1st preg I had a woman I had never met (who was extremely nice none the less). My 2nd was induced so Whalen delivered her.
2. SMG main office is moving from Summit to Berkeley Heights. Whalen (and the internists and peds in SH) will stay in Short Hills, but if you need blood work or to see another doctor you will have to schlep to Berkeley Heights. It isn't a long drive (I do it every day, about 15 min) but it is out of the way.

Ffof,
Do your two kids take after you or him?
:-)
Thanks for this info. I was hesitating with him because a friend told me he asked her why she waited so long to have a baby. The more I think about it, the more I realize what a butt-wipe question it was.

OK Pip, I'm in - can anyone recommend a good gyny in the area please? (No amateurs please)

I am stumped that I can't remember the guy who was so highly recommended a few months back (maybe a year ago)

Joseph MIGHT be his first name. anyone?

(mem - I am already considered of "advanced maternal" age and I haven't started yet! the last thing I would tolerate is that question....my mother isn't even allowed to ask it!)

Dr. Degraff is wonderful. She delivered my son and I saw her for most of my pregnancy w/my daughter (Dr. Fain delivered her, though). I adore Dr. Verdoni in the same practice - you have to see all of them if you are pregnant - and he has a great sense of humor.

My major complaint is she is so popular getting appointments with her can be difficult and the office staff is a bit rough around the edges.

Marshall Pollack on Millburn Avenue where Annie Sez is...he is just terrific...I hated when my plan changed and I had to leave him. I had an appointment with him about 3 weeks after 9/11 and I was impressed that he spent 15 minutes asking me if I was affected by 9/11 and listening to me. He cared about all of me, not just my body and female concerns. That really was impressive to me.

Thanks hismom
I like a good sense of humor! Might be in the top 3 Most Important Qualities a doctor must have, IMO

I will check that practice, as well as Drs. Ciciola, David &
Kaufman.

anyone know who Joseph somebody or other is?

mem- eewww! can't believe it came out like that!

Alice Gibbons is very good at Summit Med Group too, but you need an appointment waaaay ahead, that's why I started to go to Mary Alice for check ups. Not sure if Alice is gyn or ob/gyn.

Pippi- Apparently, if you need an ob, definitely get someone else's opinion other than mine! It's been so long since I had kids, except after having given birth 4 times, all with male doctors, I wish I had had a really good female doc.

I didn't dig the Summit Medical Group folks. When I was dehydrated from morning sickness and was new to the area, one of them started in on me about how upsetting it was that I had no support system (no church, no temple)to take my kids so I could go into the hospital right away. We had lived here like, 2 months.

Gimme a break. I went home, went to the St.Peter's High Risk Group (fabulous if you need high risk), got my in-laws to drive out in 4 hours, the St.Peters group just sent an IV via a home-health aid and everything was fine - it wasn't a real emergency. Who needs more hysteria?

I don't mind a male Ob, have always had male Gyn's. Went to a female once and didn't like her at all.

melicious - sounds like a terrible experience. sorry you went through that

Natb - BINGO!
see the other GYN thread.
that's the one.
I may not go to him, since he is apparently wayyyy too good looking.

I don't think I could handle a good looking guy who's not my husband sticking his hands up my wheelywoo (thanks mem!)

I use Dr. Vivian Chou in Chatham. I like her a lot.

Melicious, I agree with you about Summit Medical. We've had quite a few doctors there over the years. I make it a policy to stay away now, but that's just a personal opinion.

And yes, they are moving to Berkeley Heights. They are building an absolutely huge complex out there. It's very close to the 78 entrance/exit, so it will be easy on/easy off.

Dr. Simonetti delivered our first child, Dr. Pollack our second. Neither was my "regular" OB/GYN, but that's who was on when the time came. Both were great.

Dr. S is darned good looking, but after I got over him being younger than me it wasn't at all awkward. He's a very good doc imo. However, they don't take Healthnet anymore, so...

Now I go to a woman - Dr. Sandy Yeum, in W. Orange across from the JCC. She's very nice and so far so good. I've had minimal wait times in that practice since switching, although I have only gone for routine stuff - no more babies. I've also seen Dr. Klachko in that group (also female, and she looks a LOT like a thinner/prettier Kristen Johnson who played the female alien in 3rd Rock from the Sun, by the way! Also very distracting until you get used to it.)

When my former OB/Gyn practiced closed the location convenient to me, I switched to Tammy Hamilton on Northfield Avenue in Livingston (close to St. Barnabas) based on recommendations on this board. That was after I was done with childbearing, but I've been very happy with her and she gets good reviews re OB here also. It is a group practice, but I don't know much about the other doctors or how they handle the OB "call".

If you are interested in going the midwife route, I highly recommend Avalon midwives in West Caldwell. They do all routine gyn. stuff - annual exams, etc. They are also absolutely fabulous throughout pregnancy, labor and delivery.

Pdg, I got to Dr. Klachko as well and that is so funny that you said that about her looking like the 3rd woman. She really does look exactly like her. I love all of the drs in that group.

Natb - Yes, and she apparently had heard it before, based on the look on her face when I told her (she smiled, but in that 'here it comes again' way.)

I am pregnant now, and have been pretty happy with Gregory Kaufman at Ciciola, David and Kaufman.
I tried initially to get an appointment with Dr. DeGraaf (based on the raves) and quickly figured out that appointment scheduling was always going to be a battle (I work in NYC and need morning or evening appointments), that more often than not they were going to want me to go to the Verona office (not convenient) and that the staff was pretty rude on the phone. Just my 2 cents.

Drs. Pitman and Yeum, who share the practice with Dr. Klachko, are also very good. They take time to answer questions, etc., and have very reassuring manners.

The only problem with that practice is the waiting time, so, as was mentioned before, if you bring a good book (or some knitting) you will be fine.

Pippi - women have babies well into their 40s these days. You are SO not of advanced maternal age.

I like Dr. Angela Wimmer in West Orange. There is a long lead time to get an app't, but I didn't wait long in the office. She took a lot of time with me and listened well.

bmpsab - thanks for the tip on DeGraff. I will likely have the same problem, as I, too, work in NYC.

ess - I don't think I am of "advanced maternal age" (note the quotes) that's what my GYN told me when he suggested I go for genetic counseling!!
I have a cousin who had her first (and only) child at 45. She is my hero. All women who have their first child after 40 are my heros. If I knew more of them, I'd probably wait longer ...

I work in NY as well and Dr. Simonetti/Dr. Seymour had great hours, so do give them a call. If you find Dr. Simonetti disturbingly handsome, you can always switched to Dr. Seymour. While I was pregnant they encouraged me to see all the doctors in their practice just in case Dr. Simonetti was not attending the day of my delivery. They were all very nice but I liked Dr. Seymour the best (he was ALWAYS punctual, very compassionate and easy to talk to), so after my delivery (c-section by Dr. Simonetti, can barely see the scar now!!) I switched to Dr. Seymour and now see him for my check-ups, etc.
