Harrison is just off Rt 280, 20 min drive. Don't know parking situation though.

Parkway north (only if you have to - traffic likely to be horrendous), better would be local streets to the Orange / East Orange area and get on 280 East over there. You'll go through Newark, over the Stickel Drawbridge, and take the first exit.

Follow signs to the station

I did this for awhile years ago. I took Wyoming/Gregory to Northfield in West Orange, then 280 to the Harrison exit. An alternative was taking Center Street to 280 and going through East Orange.

There are a large number of parking lots nearby. The closer to the station, the more expensive.

At rush hour there is always a back up at the bridge crossing the river between Newark and Harrison. This will probably get worse before it gets better because I read that they are going to widen the bridge.

Does anyone know the parking situation on the weekend? Is there a lot that's free?

Plenty of on-street parking on the weekend.

Are you in Maplewood or South Orange? If you live below Wyoming in South Orange it's just as easy to go down Clark / Valley (not the same Valley by South Orange Ave) to the end. 280 is on your right. It's a little quicker and a little more interesting, but the other way (over Wyoming) is safer.

Why not take NJ Transit from Maplewood to Hoboken, and take the PATH from there? Traffic around Newark/Harrison can be pretty bad at rush hour, so it might take longer.

TS tried driving to Liberty State Park & taking light rail/Hoboken PATH downtown. In the morning, her commute was pretty quick, but she spent too many evenings sitting in traffic on 78. She gave it up & went back to NJT.

If it's a matter of hating NJT, you could also drive into Newark and take the PATH from there.

hey all...thanks for the tips. it isnt so much i hate njt, i am just trying to not be tied to the train schedule, and i work near grand central, so trying to shave off a little time if possible. however, the way i went today added more time! so i am looking for the quickest way to get to harrison (plenty of parking, btw.)

how about jersey city? i bet that drive is worse...anyone do that?

I do. What Greenetree suggested is fine. The drive from our house to the 78 East on ramp in town takes (6 minutes). The drive to Liberty State Park usually takes about 15 more minutes with the Caveat that there is a HUGE amount of traffic right when you enter the NJ Turnpike and try to head north to 14C. That traffic is ALWAYS AT LEAST 5 Minutes of stop and go traffic. Unfortunately it can be more like 15 minutes on a bad day, so you randomly have to expect it to take longer some days.

So for me, it takes about 20 - 25 minutes to get to Liberty State Park. I don't do the park and ride using the above ground tram. But I feel CONFIDENT that even with light rail running VERY frequently, that there is no way in the world you could get to the Exchange Place stop in less than 10 minutes. I take the Path from Exchange Place to Grand Central which is VERY quick at 10 minutes. When you arrive you need to do THE WALK out of the Path and one block East to the 4 and 5 Train, and I find that the train is actually sort of slow getting to Grand Central, usually taking me AT LEAST 15 more minutes to arrive. Then I have to walk through GC and a few block up to work which is AT LEAST 10 more minutes.

Long Story Short, I don't think you are saving much time doing it this way. When I take the regular NJ Transit train it usually takes ABOUT the same amount of time door to door. So if you doing it for another reason (I get to drive to work with TS which I find gratifying in itself) such as yourself wanting more schedule flexibility then I suppose it is fine alternative.

Personally I find the commute to GC frustrating. And for some reason I find the drive to Jersey City and then the Path to the Subway and walking all just TOO MUCH. Is it better take the Jitney to the Train to the Subway and then walk? I don't know but sometimes I think so.
