My younger brother just moved to NJ and likes adventure sports (i.e. rock climbing and kayaking) and is looking to (a) meet some people and (b) find places to rock climb (indoors and out) and kayak. Any suggestions?

There's a kayak launch area in Hoboken that's pretty cool. There are a few clubs that use it but I don't know the names. Should't be too hard to find.

I'd also have him check out the Delaware Water Gap area for various activities. Beautiful area.

I'd recommend the Shawangunk Mtns in NY ( not far from New Paltz) for rock climbing. The Wallkill River runs through New Paltz, and I've seen kayakers on it in season.

Try the Hackensack River for kayaking. The Hackensack Riverkeeper even rents out boats (if he has friends who don't have their own.) There's a launch very close to the turnpike exist for Secaucus. Also Round Valley Reservoir is good, and there's a new launch in Somerville on the Passaic River.

Here's a link to detailed information on kayak launching sites in NJ. This site is a great resource:

They have indoor rock climbing at Diamond Gymnastics - I bet the people who work there would know where to climb around here.

(How old is your brother?)
