For the steak, South Orange, the Village Celler, next to Toro Loco. For the Prime Rib, Parkwood Diner on Springfield Avenue. Call first to see if it is in the oven as it is not an every day treat. |

Arthur's Tavern is pretty good -- though not nearly as good as the NY steakhouses. Nothing beats Peter Luger, in my opinion. But that is not very local.

The steaks are Charlie Brown's are so/so at best, but I've heard the prime rib is great. |

Anyone been to the Strip House out here? The original one in NYC is very good. Not Peter Luger, but still one of NYC's better steak houses. I was surprised to learn there's one in our area. |

Flemming Steak HOuse and Wine Bar...Edgewater, NJ. Great wine list, great steaks, knowledgable wait staff. Tell the head bartender, Johnny A, that Joe R from Maplewood sent you. |

Nero's in Livingston gets good reviews, but we didn't like it. Also, try Rod's Steak and Seafood in Madison....not spectacular, but much better than Average (tad pricey). |

We did Ruth's Chris in Parsipanny recently for a birthday celebration. The steaks were perfectly fine and the sides (everything extra $) were excellent, but IMO not 3x as good as Charlie Brown's, which is how they were priced. Maybe just $5 better. Give me CB's NY Strip anyday. And I do mean any! Now I've got my own mouth watering! |

There is a place called Michael's in Cranford (I can't remember if it is on North or South Ave). High quality, steaks will run you from $25 - $35. Strip House is very good on route 10. Ruth Chris is delicious, but expensive. If you don't mind the drive, Peter Luger's is the best, but it is also $$$$. And, I actually had a very tastey rib eye at the Gaslight not too long ago. I probably eat steak as half of my meals. I wish all foods tasted like steak. |

Mayor, I probably shouldn't tell you that there is a flavor of potato chips (Utz brand, maybe?) that is steak. It's actually a little too good. |

The Old Homestead on 9th ave between 14th and 15th st in NYC. It shouldn't take more than half an hour, and it's worth it! |

Is Scotty's Sportsbar still around? It was in Milburn. They had delicious steaks and were reasonably priced. I think they were much better than Charlie Brown's. The 24 oz. Delmonico was a killer. |

Strip House in the Westminster Hotel on Rt 10 is excellent; also really like RuthChris @ Parsippany but that is a bit of a drive. Strip House is smallish and well worth the 15 - 18 minute drive from Maplewood. |

Yes, SCOTTY'S! I like the steak a wee bit better at Quincy's but Scotty's has the BIG beers and steak comes with a family style salad. Scotty's also has (I think) pinball, which is a plus. Our son loves Scotty's cause the kid's meal comes in a cardboard car. |

Went to Scotty's ("The Place for Steak!") once and was served red shoe-leather (I like mine rare) and never went back. |

I went to Scotty's a few weeks ago and the steak was terrible. I mean, really bad. I was shocked because the steaks were really good once. Went to the Ole Homestead in the Borgata yesterday and it was GREAT! Pricey, but great.

I almost forgot: O'Connor's Beef 'N Ale House. It is a little bit of a drive, (mostly on 78) but only 20 minutes. As I recall they have very good prime rib. They also have a butch shop around to the back of the building. I have not ordered from the butcher before, but I am sure that is good as well. Here is the website; http://www.oconnorsbeef.com/ Or try Sweet Waters Steakhouse: I have not been there personally, but I have been meaning to check it out. I have heard it is really good, and from their website it looks that way. It is not even 15 minutes away in downtown Westfield. http://www.sweetwaterssteakhouse.com/ Then again, if you want to take a drive, there is always the Thirsty Moose. It's on route 15, and is a pretty good drive. They make a decent steak, and also have some wild game. They usually have alligator, wild board, ostrich, and a few other things. Then they always have some specials featuring other random things. It is pretty laid back and the food is pretty good. (Also, it is not very expensive at all.) Did I mention the great selection of tap beers? http://www.thirstymoose.com/ Just looked at the menu and saw some interesting things: Cajun Alligator Cajun Honey Stung Wild Boar sandwich Chipolte infused Buffalo Burger 34 OZ Steak "Moose Size" Steak

The Strip House is awesome. get the creamed spinach with truffle oil as a side... and the goose fat potato. the clam starter is a disappointing, but the salads are good.

We tried Scotty's twice since moving here 3 years ago, and I gotta believe it's slid. Wasn't too fab. On the other hand, reading this thread caused a truly powerful lust for beef in me. We went to the Outback in Springfield; had a gigantic slab of prime rib with some horse radish on the side. Husband had rack of lamb per usual. Really good. Short of places like Ruth's Chris or some of the good NY steak houses, we like Outback!! (and that call-ahead thing works well to reduce the wait time). |
