I purchased the first two as a gift for my 8 year-old niece (in second grade). She's a skilled reader and not the slightest bit squeamish, so I thought she might like them. Any opinions on whether or not the stories are inappropriate for her age group? |

My girls love them. I believe they started reading them/my husband reading to them when they were 6 & 8, they are now almost 8 & 10. My husband took them (and my 3 yo) to see the film and they all loved that too. |

My daughter is in third grade (8) and although she has no particular fondness for the series, many of her friends do. I think it is age appropriate. |

kind of. Their really emo and depressing, with creepy things in them. It might be a bit mature for her age group as you wondered. They're really not fun books, i must say. :/ |

But the thing is that they are funny and far too melodramatic to be taken seriously! And Daniel Handler slides in a huge chunk of serious vocab and wordplay. Age 8 is perfect. |

My kid, who liked Goose Bumps and Nightmare before Christmas at an early age, really liked LS starting at I think grade 45. I think she would've liked them at a younger age had she been aware of them. Depends on what floats the kid's boat! |

My dtr changed her name to Sally when she was four years old (after the character in Nightmare before Christmas). Now, she is more squeamish about some things than i would expect -- but she loves loves loves Series of Unfortunate events. she is sad we have read all 12 already. They aren't any more gruesome than all of those Disney movies where the mother always dies! my dtr. is 8 now. |

My son started this series at age 8. He was a bit taken aback and shocked at first, but stuck with it, recognized the humor, and came to like them a lot. |

Plus, they're really literate and kids who read them will soak up more sophisticated words, style and sentence structure which can only help their own writing... |
