My friend is about to begin commuting to Manhattan from South Orange. She's an S.O. resident but far from the station.

Do you buy parking passes at town hall? Jitney passes? How early do the commuter spaces fill up?

Thank you in advance for your info and tips. [imagine an emoticon here.]

breal - I wish your friend GOOD LUCK.
the wait for permits at SO is very very long (several years)
Tell your friend to get on both the SO list and the NJ Transit list.

In the meantime, there are several places for non-permit day parking, for $4/day in the Library parking lot.

I am a SO resident without a pass. I don't drive to the train every day, only about 2X/week. On those days I prefer to park at the Maplewood train station because there is a greater number of non-permit metered parking that is 1) cheaper by $1/day and 2) closer to the train. It helps to get there by 7:30-7:45 to secure a spot.

I can't give you any info on the Jitney, as I don't take it
