Hello Folks. I posted a thread sometime last year about making a will and received good responses about who people used. I cannot locate the thread and hope people wouldn't mind responding again.

Can anyone recommend a good place?

It depends on your situation. For the simplest, if you are unmarried with no dependents, and of moderate or less in the way of assets, you can do it online. But it is worth the $100 to go to an attorney advertising simple wills to make sure it is done correctly and that it can be probated easily, without problems. Make sure it is "self-proving." If you have a family or are of considerable means with many assets, a good attorney is the only way to go. If you are a senior, an attorney specializing in senior issues is a good idea. I can't recommend the attorney I last used, as he is no longer with us.

I suspect that there are relatively few people in our community who are in such basic circumstances that a "do it yourself" or $100 will is sufficient to appropriately cover their needs. You might be surprised how much your assets are worth, but even if they don't trigger federal estate tax, they may well have New Jersey inheritance tax implications and there are many other issues to be considered. Certainly guardianship of children, if applicable, and distribution of your property in whatever way you desire.

This is seriously important folks! I'm dealing with my aging parents on a number of issues like this right now, including modifications to their wills to ensure that they reflect their wishes to the greatest degree possible under the law.

It has taught me that I need to get my will in better shape also. I don't have an attorney to recommend at this point, but I'm definitely going to be finding one.

We used Sirota & Sirota in Maplewood (973-763-3900) several years ago. I can't compare them to anyone else, but I thought that they were quite thorough. They made us discuss many things that I hadn't really thought of. It was significantly more than $100, though.
