I'm starting my 4 month old infant on foods. Is it Formula first or food first? I know formula is and will still be the main source of nutrition of the first year but not sure if I should feed her the formula or the new "solid" foods first?

Thanks!

I don't think it makes any difference. You can use the formula as the liquid to mix the cereal, anyway.

For now, the food is really just for practice.

Food first so they don't fill up on formula (or breast milk) before eating the solids.

(It's easier and faster for a hungry baby to drink a bottle than it would be to get spoonfuls of cereal, plus it sometimes takes a few tries before they like the new tastes and textures. Yes, you can mix the formula in, but let her eat the food first.)

Interesting...I was told (at that age for the baby) always breast milk (or formula) first because that's where they get the bulk of the nutrients, and you don't want them to get so full on any solids that they won't take as much milk as they should.

Also, are you sure the baby is ready for solids? Sometimes they are at 4 mos. but most babies aren't until they're 5 or 6.

Ask your pediatrician!

Yes, my pediatrician said my infant was ready and to go ahead. I've been giving my baby rice cereal for @ 2 - 3 weeks and just started peas and all seems to be well! But I wasn't sure which should be fed first. Thanks!

I used a great resource book called The Complete and Authoritative Guide - Caring for Your Baby and Young Child - Birth to Age 5, put out by The American Academy of Pediatrics.

In the Introducing Solid Foods section it says:

Quote:

One way to ease the transition to solids is to give your infant a little milk first, then switch to very small half-spoonfuls of food, and finally finish off with more milk. This will prevent him from being overly frustrated when he's very hungry, and it will link the satisfaction of nursing with this new experience of spoonfeeding.

Obviously, the word "milk" will also mean formula for those who aren't breastfeeding b/c they don't recommend the introduction of cow's milk until after 1 yr.

I agree that it's food first because other wise they will fill up on formula and/or breast milk and be less interested in the food. Also agree with pp that food at this stage is just for "fun" and to get used to textures and swallowing reflex. The formula will still be main source of nutrition til food becomes more a part of reg diet.
