A friend who is thinking of moving to Jersey from blkyn asked me about SUmmit - attitude, schools, locals, general feel. Outside of directing them to the NJ REport Cards for the school data, I don't know what to tell them. I see there are SUPER SIZED ULTRA EXPENSIVE homes there but I also see a number of multi-family and very small homes so I can't get a read from driving through. Any thoughts ? THanks |

Very rich. Very homogenous. Excellent schools. Gorgeous homes. Union County so lower taxes. Nice downtown. |

I like Summit's amenities: Big downtown, great facilities like the Y and the Connection, good restaurants and stores (including one for CDs and vinyl) and parks. I've always gotten a bit of Stepford vibe there, though. A lot of Wall Streeters, for what it's worth. |

If they are looking to rent, they will find prices cheaper than Maplewood/ South Orange. |

Right near Overlook hospital doesn't look so ritzy. I hear the rest of you folks, but there look to be some areas that are not so pricey. Vibe-wise it seems more diverse than Millburn, to me. I, too, like the downtown stores mix. I spend a fair amount of time there due to my husband's doc appointments and such -- not saying I'm trolling the neighborhoods exactly, but I've got lost in some areas that aren't expensive. |

A friend just moved there (rental) and he and his wife are stunned by the general standard of living. They feel "poor" there, tho they are two incomes, no kids. It's lovely and all...but that might be a concern. |

I hae worked in Summit since ....well, well...forever...Downtown is nice but a lot of stores have closed up or moved away..smaller boutique type stores seem to thrive..but Sealfons, Roots, Troasts all are memories. People in Summit do seem to have their noses tilted slightly higher than who you might meet in Millburn/Short Hills. There is a lot of old money here as well. There is definately two sides to Summit...the very wealthy and it seems like the rather poor live here as well....I know that there are a lot of what seems like group homes here and I know that there is also a low income housing project between downtown and the train station area just before you get into the heart of the town.... Great restaurants here...nice place to work but give me good old Maplewood/South Orange any day! |

The downtown is one of several in New Jersey that are thriving. Parking is difficult on the street but they have the garages. They even have nail salons. There are two Summits. East Summit which is on one side of the Railroad tracks and the rest of Summit which controls the politics and looks down on everything else. Give me Maplewood any day. JC |

Am I the only one who thinks Maplewood/South Orange is becomming more like Summit? Mercedes, Bimmers and Lexus's (Lexi?) at the train station. Women in minks and jeans parking theit $50,000 plus SUVs in the cross walks in front of Kings. Me thinks we are becomming a victim of our success. More analytically, the median family income in Summitt is just under $134,000, MWSO combined is just under $115,000 as of 2005. While we really don't have an estate area, we are moving in on them. End of rant. |

I do get a giggle in Summit when I see some pretty ordinary people sporting perfect, NYC-style haircuts, Ralph Lauren and up from that while en route to a pizza place. Agree with Bob K in spades. See an awful lot of pricey houses in this town, and pricey cars. Soon some us will have to secede and join Vauxhall or Irvington! |

I lived in Summit for a while and plan on staying in S.O. forever. There's a thread about this in the archives. (Wow, I feel like an old-timer here now!) Summit is different from Maplewood and South Orange. It closes earlier. There's not a college; Seton Hall keeps businesses open, delivering, and having live music. An interesting fact about Summit: there are two separate Back-to-School-Nights. One for English speaking parents and one for Spanish speaking parents. Interpret that as you will. J.B.

Jersey Boy, while having separate back to school nights offends most Maplewoodian's political correctness gene, Summit does a heck of a good job on educating their Hispanic and economically disadvantaged students in comparison to our district as shown on the attached chart: http://www.schoolmatters.com/App/SES/SPSServlet/QuickCompareSearchRequest?MenuTy pe=&MenuLevel=0&Site=pes&StateID=31&LocLevelID=116&StateLocLevelID=-1&LocationID =-1&Delete=false&Sel=989843&Sel=989862
