Real Department of State types. My mother in law (Jamaican) has been refused a visa 3 times and we are at the end of our collective rope! Anyone know anyone who can help us out with this? I suspect it is because she is not wealthy and assume (they say as much on their phone message in Kingston) that people are going to emigrate, but believe me my mother in law is not going to be staying. Anyway, any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Does State Dept. cite her wealth/income as a reason for denial?
Are you sponsoring her?

I'm assuming you are talking about a tourist visa? You can fax the US Embassy on her behalf and state your case, assurances that she will return etc. From your screen name I guess you are an MD - it won't hurt to mention that and other details that make you and your husband upstanding citizens. Then it just really matters whose hands it falls into.

I recently had to do this with embasssies/consuls in India and China (work-related)and it's a crapshoot but worth a try.

Just spoke to a guy at the State Department and he said she poses a risk (from the government's perspective) of emigration (immigration?) basically because she is a poor country woman (despite the fact that she does own her own home and land).

We are talking about a tourist visa. Faxing over an assurance is a good idea. I'll try it. I guess it can't hurt! sigh!

thanks.
