Any advice would be appreciated...

I'm probably making a move to Manhattan to rent an apartment for a while. I'm looking for a 1 bedroom preferably on the west side...although I'm pretty open to location if it's a great place.

Anyone have any leads on buildings, brokers, or other methods of finding a place? I've really only been poking around on craigslist so far. Is there any chance I'll find a nice 1 bedroom for under $2K a month?

Again, thanks for any input you can give.

Depend what you call the upper west side...

If you want to spend under $2000 you'll find nice apartments in Hudson Heights, which is the WAY upper west side - next to Ft. Tryon Park and the Cloisters (above GW Bridge/181'st St. all the way west above the Hudson River. There are lots of prewar buildings, great parks, easy walk to the A train. The neighborhood is very hip and safe for the last few years.

Not quite that far...I know typically the Hell's Kitchen area is a little less pricey than other areas...I figured that may be my best best, but I don't think I'm up for going as far north as 181st.

I don't know where you work, but Hudson Heights is a much nicer neighborhood than Hell's Kitchen.

Good luck!

For rentals try citihabitats.com - for 2K you can probably get a very basic, no frills, small 1 bed or a pretty nice studio. But you never know. Looking for an apt in NYC can be a full time job.
