On my commute this morning a metal object on the GSP was flying through the air and hit my car. The hood, door and rear mirror are badly scratched. I assume a truck had lost that sheet of metal and the car in front of me went over it, blowing it into the air and onto my car. I was able to steer my car to the right so it didn't hit the windshield. What can I do? Is somebody liable for this? What would you do? Poor car! Poor me! |

No trucks allowed on GSP. Probably nobody is liable and you will need to make a claim with your insurance. Poor car. Poor you. But, thankfully, nobody was hurt. Had something like that happen to me on NJ Turnpike years ago. Windshield was shattered, but it saved me from being decapitated! |

Unless you can "pin" the metal or the cause of the flying metal to another vehicle, you lose. Sorry. JC |

I had the exact same experience except it involved a truck tire. It smashed the front end of the car, windsheild and did about $2,500 worth of damage. It was covered under insurance, no problem. Be sure to tell them you don't know where it came from , and was a road hazard ( I think I actually used the words "from outer space") |

We had a similar experience on the turnpike a couple of years ago. There was some large sharp object in the road and it pierced our tire. We didn't see it until it was too late, and probably if we'd swerved to avoid it, the result would have been worse - there was a lot of traffic. Luckily, we didn't lose control and were able to get to the edge of the road. But it was totally nervewracking waiting there for help - we were convinced that some truck woud smash into us. |

I too, had a similar experience. I was on Rt. 78 and before I knew it, a truck in front of me had driven over a large piece of sheet metal. Thankfully, I saw it happening, but was not able to immediately move into the next lane. The metal went up onto the hood of my car, then onto my windshield. My view was mostly obstructed, but I was able to pull to the shoulder. Needless to say, I was very shaken up (had my 1 yr. old in the car, too). I called my insurance company and they had me fill out a detailed written report and a hand drawn pictorial. They covered the repairs - brand new hood. I wouldn't worry. Our highways are a dangerous mess! Glad you're OK. |

On a Sunday afternoon a month ago we were on the turnpike heading home from the city. Maybe three or four cars in front of us was an eighteen wheeler truck. In an instant one of the truck's axles, wheels and tires intact, came loose from the truck and headed our way, bouncing erratically. There was no way we could have stopped to avoid it, so we held our breath. It bounced over two cars in as many lanes, then over the median, coming to rest in a sort of "no man's land" between highways. It missed our car, with our two year old in the back seat, by about fifty feet....I have no idea how it failed to do serious damage, but we are eternally grateful. The driver of the truck never even slowed down. |

Holy crap! I can't even imagine how frightening that must have been. I would have had to pull over to calm myself down. |

Thanks guys. I filed a claim, and insurance will cover (there is still my deductible though). Did I tell you that Geico is GREAT? They actually have HUMANS talk to you and they are friendly and competent. Haven't had that in months... |
