yes, does anyone know of any relatively local sources for pre-packaged, prepared edible insects? I am looking for them for a Fear Factor theme. Thank you.

The won't be cheap, but try Fortnum & Mason. They have a store in Manhattan and you can probably order online. I know this because I had contemplated chocolate-covered ants as a gift a couple years back. Not that you were going to, but please don't invite me to this party.

Back in the day, Pier 1 used to carry chocolate covered grasshoppers, ants and such. I liked it better then... |

VIG, its a theme party...by the way -- are insects permissable for vegetarians? If they are just another form of meat, is that why you find it gross? SOL, I cant imagine a place like Pier 1 carrying that now! |

I figured it was for a theme party—Fear Factor, from your post above. Fun and original idea! I eat fish, I still find the thought of eating insects gross. I suppose if I was doing that theme, I'd "chicken out" and do chocolates shaped like insects, gummy worms, etc. That would be gross enough! |

Locally some of the Asian markets like Kam-Man on Rte 10 in East Hanover or AFC (Asian Food Center) on Rte 22 in Dunellen might carry some. In California over Christmas I found dried seasoned miniature crabs in a Japanese market which I bought for fun. They looked a lot like insects as you might imagine. I had a junior high social studies teacher who had traveled to Asia and brought back fried grasshopper in a tin (much like those julienned potato sticks.) As one of the brave souls who tried it I can tell you they were delicious. A lot like potato chips in fact! Happpy noshing! |

The store Evolution in Soho has a few packaged critters including some type of larvae. Also, I have some dried grasshoppers that I brought back from Oaxaca, Mexico - PL me if you'd like some of those. It was really a remarkable sight, mounds of grasshoppers in the local markets, amid such a variety of dried peppers, etc. I was really surprised to find that they were not a mere tourism gimmick but really used as snacks and seasoning. |

Hank: If I am invited - can you make sure at least some of the insects are lactose free? Thanks in advance. |

runon, thank you, I am PLing you...I did see a Food Network show once from somewhere in Asia where the markets also had baskets of fried grasshoppers or crickets. Josh, since it is a kids function, I am trying to make sure that eating insects does not exacerbate any peanut allergies...but I will refrain from serving the milk-fed grubs. |

Friends of mine just attended the Explorer's Club annual dinner in NYC last weekend. You should get a look at the "exotic" food that was served as appetizers. There are literally 30 -40 items each one cleverly described. ie: Rocky Mountain Oysters - Beer battered Testicular DNA capsules, Mealworm Sushi, Explorers Martini with "vertabrate optic olive capsule", TIbetan Yak Loaf, North American Rodentia, North American crickets (with pepper Jelly cream cheese on celery and Toastettes), Honey Laden Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches, Tempura Battered Tarantulas, Succulent Earthworms lightly spiced with curly fries, Civit Coffee, etc! I would give the club a call and ask for their sources... |
