It's going to expire at the end of May. Do I have to go to a DMV site and spend half a day waiting in line? I have heard there are stricter identification requirements now then when I got my current NJ driver's license (as a transplant from NYC). |

Yes, you need to go to the DMV. I've gone to Springfield when it opens (8 am I think) and been out by 8:30. You need 2 forms of identification, I think I brought my license and social security card (as my birth certificate has my maiden name). Also I think I brought a recent bill (like mortgage or PSEG) that shows my address, although I don't remember if they needed it. If you find the DMV website they tell you exactly what you need to bring. |

You should soon (if not already) receive a mailing which includes a brochure describing the required ID. Basically I brought everything I had and they selected my birth certificate, marriage license (to support my name change from my birth certificate), recent bank statement (proof of address) and possibly the Social Security card. They put the passport and second bank statement back in the envelope I brought and said they didn't need those. I think that if you don't have the birth certificate, then the passport has the same point value. I went at about 9:30 AM on a Wednesday (mid-month) and was in and out in under an hour and left with my new drivers license in hand. |

The new and improved DMV is actually new and improved. I've been to the one in Springfield a couple of times, at different random times of the day, and been in and out fairly quickly--probably under an hour. DO go to the DMV website and make sure you bring all of the appropriate I.D. or they WILL NOT allow you to renew (and BTW your current license does not count as I.D.). They are very strict about this now. |

The ID situation is fairly complicated, so check out the website for the requrements before you go. http://www.state.nj.us/mvc/index.shtml |

The DMV has really improved tremendously. If you have the right paperwork you should be in and out of there in a quick timeframe. They even let you see your photo and retake if you don't like it, before they print your license. It has been an amazing transformation from what it used to be like.

I like the greeter at Springfield MVS. You walk in and immediately someone says hello, checks your forms and directs you. No more waiting in line only to find out you should have been standing somewhere else. jab, I think you're going to enjoy the experience. |

golden, you will need to re-take the written test when you move to NJ. You can print the drivers manual off the dmv website (you will want to review it before taking the test). You won't need to take the driving test. Make sure you bring your license with you as well as the all the forms of id described on the dmv website. Hope that helps. |

golden, If your friend has a multiple class license from the other state, tell them to make sure the person behind the counter understands they want to transfer all the classes to N.J. When I moved to N.J. I had to sit for two written exams and said the hell with the third when the clerk said, for the second time, "oh! that's another exam. You should have told me." TomR |

Golden, get the handbook and study. I came from out of country and had a hell of a time as many of the questions have to do with excruciating minutia of driving law in NJ. There are 50 multiple choice questions and you need to correctly answer 40. Good luck. dOd |

I just renewed my license this morning in Springfield. In at 8:04am out by 8:17am. Brought my passport, photo driver's license and health insurance card. My picture looks horrible. |
