Just moved to MW and am looking for a vet for our two 10 year old cats. I saw some older postings from 2004. They suggested the Maplewood Animal Hosp. across from Dunkin Donuts. It would be uber-convenient since it's in my neighborhood.
Reccomended? What are the other options around here? Thanks!

You will likely get many current recommendations for Dr. Malampati at Maplewood Animal Hospital. I cannot say enough good things about him. He treated our 16-y.o. diabetic cat and is such a kind man.

This is going to sound staged, but Dr. Malampati also treated our elderly diabetic cat and I have a high opinion of him too. His place is on the north side of Springfield Ave a few doors up from Millburn Ave.

One thing: His facilities are a little drab and small. When we needed to board the cat we brought her to Summit Animal Hostital on Morris Turnpike where the facilities are comparatively luxurious. They're also good vets, but further away and more expensive.

Historical point: Dr. Malampati bought the practice back around 1980, but it's much older than that. I once saw a photo of the building from 1950 with a sign painted on the west-facing wall that said "Maplewood Animal Hospital - Boarding, Cleaning, Plucking"

Another vote for Dr. Malampati. He helped me through a very sad episode with a beloved cat. I will always be grateful for his kindness.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. Since my cats could just walk to their appts to MAH, I'm glad to hear the positive comments. Now if only they would.

How does Dr. Malampati compare to Dr. Levine at South Orange Animal Hospital?

Dr. Levine's clients love him and his work. There is usually more praise for him than for Dr. Mallampati. You have two good choices.

I haven't met Dr. Levine. We use Dr. M. It's obvious how much Dr. M likes his patients. He seems so happy to see each of them. He calls my pets "Baby".

Another vote for Dr. Malampati. He is kind, patient and always takes the time to answer any questions you may have. My family has been taking their pets there for years.

My vote is for Dr. Sepulvada at Millburn Animal Hospital. Our elderly diabetic cat is kittenish once again after the proper diagnosis and insulin dosage. He's even chasing his tail and shadow. They're thorough, professional, but alas NOT cheap. But then Ernest The Cat is worth it!

Malampati, Levine and Sepulveda all have numerous, raving, loyal fans. I would normally recommend Levine or Sepulveda (because I've used them both), but with such great feedback, no reason not to use Malampati. Anything to limit the dreaded time in the carrier.

In fact, years ago, when we lived in Bayonne, and Dr. Sepulveda was with the practice two blocks away, we'd put our kitty on a leash and harness and take her sans carrier.

I always have to throw my praise toward the practice of Dr. Glauberg and Dr. Sepulveda in Millburn. Though this practice is probably not the cheapest option, I wouldn't go anywhere else.

I grew up in South Orange, and, since I was 10 years old, my family took our cat to Dr. Glauberg. When I moved back to Maplewood almost six years ago, I returned to Dr. Glauberg's practice. They have been so kind and supportive in good times and in bad.

That said, it is nice to see such enthusiasm for other vets. From what I have read and heard, I am sure they would all be wonderful.

Having lived in Maplewood over 40 years and making the rounds of veterinarians, I can honestly say that of those in Maplewood/South Orange/Millburn, I can recommend Dr. Levine, and Dr. Stack (Valley Vet Hospital), if you catch him in a good mood.

Dr. M is indeed a very gentle person. I agree with Dogbert that the place is a drab, but we manage not be bothered by that. I wish I could try other vets but Dr. M is super better than the vet we used in Lake Hiawatha (long story...), but we don't want to put our babies through seing different vets to shop and compare. Our babies are always taken care of by Dr. M very well, and his rates are not bad as well. There are so many recommendations in this post, so I think you're pet is in good hands in this town.

I have heard that Dr. M has sold his practice, so he may not be there much longer. My experience with him is not the greatest.

Dr. Levine's office are not fancy. The place my mom takes her cats is quite fancy. It always cracks me up, because the animals don't care either way. As long as the place is not dirty or unsafe and the docs/staff are wonderful, it's cool.
