The time has come to ditch our infant carseat and upgrade to a "big boy" convertible carseat. We are looing for one that works rear or forward facing, one that is easy to move from car to car, and of course, one that's safe. Any suggestions? |

Well people will probably gasp in shock when they read this but I have to say, they're all manufactured to the same set of standards so there's no real "low end" and the higher end ones just try to differentiate themselves with various bells and whistles to justify the extra cost. Add to that the fact that they're all manufactured out in China somewhere and then printed with whatever company's logo is selling them, it's hard to differentiate one basic seat from another. We have a Graco and another one I couldn't even tell you without walking out to the car and looking. The Graco I know only because it says "GRACO" in big letters on the top. Or at least I think it does. I will say one thing that does provide functional differentiation. One of our seats has the ability to adjust the tightness of the straps while the seat is installed in the car, while the other one requires you to remove the seat and fiddle with the straps in the back. In this weather where they may be wearing a heavy winter coat one day and a lighter jacket the next, the ability to adjust the straps in this way is more than a convenience.

I just looked this up on Consumerreports.org for my sister-in-law. It is a pay site (worth every penny) but information like this re safety items is free to all. Such an enlightened organization is Consumers Union. Just go, look and buy well. I think you'll learn quite a bit and I think it's a bit more complicated (though not much) than wnb suggests. I also wholeheartedly agree w/ wnb about adjustability without rmoval being hugely contributory to parent and child happiness. Drive well and be well, all. David |

Agree about adjustablility. Also would add I've found a big difference in the comfort. We had the cheapest Graco for a grandparent's car and would never use it on long trips. We have the Britax Roundabout. Not sure if it is a different model name now. It is awesome. Only thing I wish it had was a cupholder. |
