We are going out of town in July and wanted to find a place that will take our soon to be 1 year old puppy, but not just in a small kennel, instead a place that has dogs play together during the day. We would also consider a house/dog sitting service. I have heard of doggy spas as well. Any information or resources for this would be appreciated. Thanks |

Try Preppy Pup in Summit. They let the dogs play outside in a fenced yard with pools of water for them to play in. Our dog loves it! |

We have used Preffered Pet Care in West Orange numerous times and they have rooms for each of the dogs, no kennels and they let the dogs play during the day. We have been really happy with them and our pup always comes home tuckered out. |

We've used the Morristown Animal Inn for both dogs in the past. When we picked them up after a week, they seemed well adjusted and happy -- not gun shy and depressed as they usually do @ other kennels. Everything there is a la carte like extra play time with humans and some other crap :-) You can get them groomed there too. Good luck! www.morris-animal-inn.com

I was pretty turned off by Morris Animal Inn's policy of making you pay for "playtime" in 15 or 30 minute blocks. When I was looking for a place to book over Christmas (because our usual place, the super-fantastic Preferred Pet Care was booked), I called them, and they made it clear that the odds of us getting boarding over Christmas were directly proportional to how much we were willing to pay for "extra" services. My recommendatiosn: Preferred Pet Care (www.preferredpetcare.com) -- They've been walking our dogs every day for years, and our dogs have stayed there dozens of times when we're out of town. They get their own rooms, with sofas and beds to sleep on, and spend the day running wild with other buddies. Our dogs love it. Camp Bow Wow (www.campbowwowusa.com) -- This is where our dogs stay when we wait too logn to make reservations and PPC is booked. It's also fantastic, just further away (in Bridgewater, takes about 20 mins to get there). Dogs play together all day, they organize fun little activities, and as a cool feature -- you can monitor your dogs live over the Internet via Web cams. Staff was fantastic. Slightly cheaper than Preferred Pet Care, though both are reasonable.

It doesn't do you any good now, but Preffered Pet Care will be moving from West Orange to Maplewood, to a building in the industrial zone on Rutgers. |

Also, you might look at dogsitters who stay in your home. They watch after the house and take care of your dog in their own environment. We have a great one who is much less expensive than kennels. Unfortunately she isn't taking new clients right now! |

We use Hal Wheelers in Cedar Grove they have been around for years. Check out thier web site at www.halwheelers.com. The facility is very clean and the staff is very friendly as well. |

Hal Wheelers brings the dogs out to play. Privateline me or email me at noglider@pobox.com, and I'll give you information on the woman I use. She brings my dog to her home. It works out very well. I think if my dog could talk, he'd tell me how much he likes it over there.

Hey Tom... Can you elaborate more on what you said about Hal Wheelers? We have to be out of town for two weeks and are boarding Fletcher there. We normally use Morris Animal Inn (and LOVE it) but since this is such a long trip we decided to use Hal Wheelers boarding school program. They are going to work with him on walking on his leash, and hopefully. I'll feel less sad to leave him. Thanks in advance... Jen |

I don't remember exactly how it works at Hal Wheelers, but I think there is a courtyard where they bring the dogs together to play. You should ask them how it works.

Thanks, that was my understanding of Hal Wheelers works. When I visited there, it seemed as though they bring the dogs together to play, when appropriate. On top of that, you can pay for ala carte services etc ... Honestly, I was mostly just trying to understand if your comment was meant as a positive or negative one regarding Hal Wheelers. I've visited and checked them out thoroughly, but I'm always nervous when I leave the big guy somewhere and am always looking for opinions. Again, thanks. Jen |

Oh! No complaint at all about Hal Wheelers! But once I found the underground network of women who take dogs in their homes, I prefer that route. What they do is not legal, but as long as it works out well, I'm happy. They do require the same immunization records that the kennels use, and that's good. If you prefer a legal kennel, you will like Hal Wheelers.

Thanks, again!! I totally agree with you. I'd much rather leave Fletcher with an individual (I'll probably hit you up for the reference someday!) but two weeks is a long time and Hawaii is far away, so I wanted something more professional this time. Now that I think about it, that's it, no more two week vacations for us! LOL! Oh, and as for the original post, I do LOVE Morris Animal Inn. Fletcher is always happy, healthy and well-cared for there. On his last stay there, we had to pick him up early and at an unexpected time. He looked happy and in great shape in the middle of his stay, not just pretty-ed up for pick-up day. HOWEVER, and this is a biggie, they are SUPER-expensive. I also have to agree, that the management will do all they can to bleed the most out of the busy holiday season. But the people who run the facility and who care for the dogs day to day are really wonderful and I have total trust in them. A mixed recommendation, I know, but I wanted to share my full experience. Good luck! Jen |

I highly recommend Best Friends Pet Resort on Route 22 West in North Plainfield. My dog is high maintenance (fear aggressive, picky eater, etc.) and they do a great job with him. You can add on doggy day camp or play sessions during the stay. Steer clear of Preppy Pup. It's cramped and noisy (practically on Rt 24!), my dog came home a basket case after staying there. I visited the new Pet Hotel at Petsmart in Secaucus last weekend. It's a very cool concept, but it's quite a hike from MW/SO. |

Yikes, I had a bad dream last night. We left our dog with an old woman named Brenda for one night. We came back and found that she had had one of his hind legs amputated. I hate bad dreams. I don't know any old women named Brenda.

Our dog just spent his first day at a kennel in Jersey City called Boca's Play-N-Stay. We learned of them through one of my husband's colleagues who lives in Hoboken, and often boards her dog there. Since Preferred Pet Care is booked for spring break week, we decided to give this place a trial run. It's in a pretty run-down warehouse area, close to exit 14B off of I-78. They have a very large area on the top floor of one of the warehouses, outfitted with large indoor play areas. There's also a new, large outdoor run. The place was clean, the staff was great, and our dog seems to have had a great time. The pricing is very straightforward - no menus of "extras". We're going to send him a few more times before our vacation to get him acclimated. It seems out of the way, but then so is Morristown. http://www.bocasplaynstay.com/index.html |

I would never use Hal Wheelers. They're totally RUDE! They won't ever get a peny from moi! Try Preferred Pet Care! They're more localized too... |

Preferred Pet Care, book early, they're full for a reason. Forget about Wheelers if your dog has any Pit Bull in him/her , they wont take them. |

Hal Wheeler's is GREAT. Do NOT use Preppy Pup. Our dog came home from there with bleeding paw pads and missing 1/2 a tooth. The wacko who runs the place said no one noticed, because the dog is shy and kept to herself. How no one could notice that a dog is limping and bleeding from the feet is beyond me. Repeat: DO NOT USE PREPPY PUP.

Our dogs both came home from Preferred Pet Care with bleeding paws. They said it was because of the recycled rubber they used as a covering outside and that some dogs are more sensitive to it. We wouldn't use them again because of this, however aside from that it seemed like a great place and our dogs enjoyed it. |

My first job ever was at Preppy Pup washing and walking dogs after school and on weekends when I was 10 years old. At the time, they were located in downtown Summit. I would never, ever, ever bring my dogs there for grooming or boarding. |

They use a surface that INJURES some dogs, and it's the DOGS' fault for being sensitive to it?!
