I'm a resident in the Maplewood Village condos. One day last week when I came home, I found a strange car parked in the (assigned) spot next to me, with two teenagers just sitting inside. Suspicious, I went inside but peeked out back at the spot to see what they were doing periodically. After awhile, another car came, parked right next to the first one, and the person got out of their car and into the one next to mine. All three stayed in there for about 20 minutes, and then the two cars zoomed off into the night. I had my suspicions but I didn't call the cops.

Tonight, the same situation was happening. I got home from work and the same car with the same two kids was parked right next to my spot. The guys were just sitting there waiting. On a whim, I went inside and about 10 minutes later, came back out onto my back porch on my cell phone. Just as I suspected, they tore off immediately. Little do they know I was talking to my mother, but I figured if they were doing something they shouldn't have, they'd leave out of fear. I should mention that my back door isnt' really near the parking lot so for them to have noticed me talking on my phone, they had to have been on the lookout for something.

Did I just open myself up to a vengeful home invasion? I didn't call the police, and in fact as they tore away they saw that I was sitting down, laughing and talking, but I'm scared that I made the wrong decision and p*ssed off some drug dealers.

I call the cops whenever a strange vehicle sits idling outside my house. I don't use 911; I call the desk seargent and ask them to check it out. They are always very nice about it. This past Saturday night, for example, a truck from a "local" masonry business (with a name I've never seen before), sat idling outside our house for half an hour. The windows were blacked out and it was dark out, so they weren't doing masonry. MPD gave a drive by. No big deal.

The kids may not even have noticed you. The larger question is: whose spot is that? You may want to track it down and ask the owner.

Kids do dumb things and hang out. But, just to be on the safe side, you could take down the license plate and give a call. I once looked out my window when I heard lots of cursing and noise, only to be told to "f-off" by the passer-by. I didn't call the cops, but one of the neighbors did. I did give a description of the kids. I am sure that they were just acting tough and no one ever did anything to our house.

But, if someone has bad intentions and they know that the neighbors are proactive, they are more likely to go elsewhere.

Thanks, that's reassuring. I knew something odd was up the first time because the parking spot belongs to my next door neighbors. They have no kids, and my first instinct was to give the squatters the benefit of the doubt that they were waiting for someone, but after the situation with the covert meeting in their car, my hackles were raised.

Hopefully they've been freaked out and will do their drug deals, if that's what they were doing (and I'm inclined to believe they are) somewhere else. I just didn't want to call the police if I wasn't sure but from now on I'll listen to my instincts.

I once noticed that a car was stopped in front of my house for several minutes later in the evening. When I began to hear loud voices coming from the car I called the Maplewood police. It turned out that a man stopped his car and was fighting with the woman who was with him, and the woman ended up going with the police instead of staying with the man. I wouldn't hesitate to call the police if something could be wrong.

Agreed! Although the other day I saw a suspicious car around nine at night. Stopping at everyone's driveway looking for who knows what. Our neighbor had just had their car broken into, so I picked up the phone and was just about to call the police. Turns out it was a delivery guy

I would rather be safe than sorry!

Red- I called MPD once because there were two guys transferring something from one car to another at 1am. They had two young boys with them. Turns out that they were dads and sons dividing up a morning paper route.

I also called once because, while stopped for a traffic light next to the karate place, I saw a man luring a child into a car with a toy. Again, a father whose son didn't want to leave class.

As you said, better safe than sorry. You'd never forgive yourself if something happened later and you'd done nothing.

I also would call over not calling - I tend to go with my gut...

You felt that something not-right was happening & you trusted that. I think you did do the right thing.

Since the incidents happened on private property I think it is OK to call the police. The most likely scenario is something quite innocent as described by Jab, Red and Green person, but the possibility of having your parking lot used for drug deals is worth the phone call.

No, it was a silver Civic. The first time I mentioned to my mother that the weird guy was parked next to my car, she asked if I thought my car would be ok. I told her his car was much nicer than mine and he probably wouldn't be caught dead trying to do something to a Ford Escape!

Last week I watched them leave after they finished their business, and they turned right off my street towards Irvington. I don't like to be the kind of person that assumes everyone from Irvington is bad news, but I absolutely had a bad feeling in this instance.

i would call the police with their license plates.

if they are not doing anything they shouldn't, why don't they just park the car on the street like everyone else?

There's this one guy with a black audi you should watch out for as well...two gorgeous kids..not sure if they are his or not they are so damn cute...this guy will charm you at Kings, telling you that he forgot his wallet, he just needs to buy some ribs (dry rub variety) and lamb to feed his kids...don't fall for it..

Zach Williams:

I know who you are talking about with the black audi. He is the same guy who used butter on his baby's diaper rash. MHD, I think is handle is.

spol-

of course you did the right thing. If it happens again get the license plate number and call the cops...if you made these kids nervous talking on your cellphone, I wouldn't worry too much about them...

can't we get the license plate for this black civic?
