I'm trying to help a family member find some affordable health insurance. She can't get it through work, and I'm guessing there are a number of SOMA residents in the same boat. I checked the archives and couldn't find anything. I guess I'm looking either for a broker who can help her sort through the options or insurance companies that have plans for individuals. I realize she might only be able to afford catastrophic/hospitalization, but that would be better than nothing!
Thanks.

Check out Oxford Health Plans. There are a number of options, and they are not as expensive as one might think. I was in the same situation. You don't need a broker, just go to the website and request enrollment forms.

A good place to do basic research on individual health insurance is www.ehealthinsurance.com. It has a basic outline of most of the individual health insurnace plans available in NJ (from HMO's to Traditional coverage). You can buy online from them, directly from some of the carriers or go to an agent.

You can also check out the state's web-site. It is more technical, but confirms the information on the ehealthinsurance site.

You can also go to an insurance agency that sells individual policies. Costs should be about the same on all as NJ has strict requirements.

In the long run, we are pretty lucky to have individual health insurance available in NJ. In some states it is almost impossible to get this coverage with or without medical underwriting.

NPR recently (Tuesday maybe?) had a couple of health insurance guys on the Leonard Lopate show. They were going to post numbers on their website, you might want to check it out.
