Our wonderful dog has been diagnosed with hypocalcemia, high calcium levels in his blood. This causes him to drink lots of water and pee all over, which is bad for his kidneys (and my carpets). Sadly, in 99 out of 100 cases, this condition is a sign of lymphoma. However, he is completely asymptomatic in all other regards -- good appetite, lots of energy, no swellings in his lymph nodes, no other blood abnormalities -- and this is highly unusual for a dog with lymphoma (Dr. Levine says he's never seen it before).

So we are taking him to a specialist on 4/13; she will take x-rays to search for lymphoma and hopefully have other ideas as well. But while we wait for our appointment, I was wondering, on a long shot, if anyone had any experience with this sort of situation. Thanks.

Dear Amateur night:

I am a little confused because hypocalcemia is low calcium level and Hyercalcemia is high calcium level. Which one is it??

There are many reasons for Hypocalcemia and I have enclosed some links so you can preview:

And here is the link for Hypercalcemia:

How old is your dog? The fact that he/she is asymtomatic in all other aspects makes me think you should rerun the tests. Read up on both conditions and doublecheck what symptoms your dog has. A second test is definetely recommended.

You can contact me anytime at 973-508-8221
Best of luck.

Bajou}

Thanks Bajou! He has HIGH calcium levels -- not low. We repeated the test after a week of antibiotics and it was exactly the same -- 15. Iwill read the links, thanks very much.

From this great site:
"Polydipsia and polyuria are the most common signs of hypercalcemia and result from an impaired ability to concentrate urine and a direct stimulation of the thirst center." He has this -- bu no other symptoms.
