I am trying to give directions to Maplewood from Route 80 (as it comes through PA).

Does anyone have a strong preference between taking 80 to 280 to Northfield to Gregory/Wyoming etc. versus taking 24?

Please advise. Thanks!

Taking 80 to 280 to Northfield to Gregory/Wyoming is the way to go.

I would do 287 to 24 to 78 East, 49B which lets them off right by Home Depot. Might take a little longer but seems much more direct to me.

As someone who frequently goes between SO and western PA via I-80, I can offer the following:

1. 287 is never a good idea anytime near what may be considered rush hour. You'll waste too much time caught up around Morristown trying to get to 24. I've also lived in Madison, so I've witnessed this many times. 287 tends to get backed up easily, so I'd avoid it.

2. 80 to 280 is the fastest way- I use the Clinton St/E Orange exit for SO, but the 577S exit for W. Orange may be quicker to get to Northfield/Gregory. It's only 1 block on Northfield to Gregory from Prospect.

Thanks, everyone.

I think I am going to provide the 280 way, if for no other reason than there are fewer twists and turns and signs to watch than the Route 24 way. Also, it will likely be dark, so simplicity is king, in this case.

Starletta, are you suggesting the exit from 280 that gets off near Essex Green? Do you know the number of that exit?

Thanks again!!!!

ess,

That's exactly the exit that I'm talking about. I think it's 8A, for Prospect Avenue/West Orange (577S). That way, they can take 577 until it runs into Northfield, make a left, and make a right at the next light (Gregory). It's ideal at night because you don't have to watch signs, really.

I actually used that route before I was comfortable going through East Orange.

Below is a portion of the directions I give family coming to visit from the Harrisburg area.

ROAD TO MAPLEWOOD
Take I-81 East to I-78 East. WATCH OUT FOR THE SPLIT!! Follow signs to Allentown and Bethlehem.
I-78 takes you all the way to Maplewood.

REST STOP/FOOD/FUEL
A great stop on I-78 is an hour and a half out of Harrisburg, just before Allentown. I don't know the exit number but it is for Rt. 100: Foglesville and Trexlertown. Take the exit heading South to Trexlertown. Right off the highway you have your choice of Burger King (clean bathrooms), Taco Bell, and our favorite Yocco's Hot Dogs.

BACK ON THE ROAD
You head east again on I-78. The Maplewood exit is clearly labeled Maplewood, number 49 or 50. Do not take the express lanes as you get closer to Newark. Keep to the right hand lanes for the exit 49 (or 50).

OFF THE EXIT
You can only turn right. Follow road to first light then turn right. This is SPRINGFIELD AVENUE.

Stay on Springfield Ave. for 1.6 miles. You'll pass nine traffic lights.

LANDMARKS
At about 1 mile on Springfiled there's a small Burger King on the right (after the fifth light). At the fourth light after BK TAKE A SOFT LEFT ONTO BOYDEN AVENUE. This is kind of a big intersection, there will be a Coney Island Hot Dog stand on left and a QuickCheck on the far right corner.

Thanks - but from where I needed to start, the 80 option worked better. I gave the directions from 280. Very easy.

I wouldn't do 287. It's way out of the way and confusing if you don't know what you're doing. Take 80 East to 280 East. Get off at Prospect Ave exit heading South. Take it to the end, which is Northfield Road. Make a left onto Northfield. Right at first light onto Gregory. Then it depends on where in Maplewood you need to go.

As a South Orange resident who lives not far off Wyoming, I would recommend going one more exit past Prospect, taking a right at the end of the ramp onto Mount Pleasant, and turning left onto Gregory at the first light. Fewer lights than Prospect, and definitely shorter.

Thanks everyone.

The 80 to 280 directions worked just perfectly!
